Bram would have wandered past us as part of his daily walks too; I wonder if our old girl added to his inspiration?! 🤩🧛🏼‍♂️🤔

In the summer of 1890, Irish novelist Bram Stoker was on holiday in the seaside town of Whitby.

Despite spending barely a month there it left a deep impression on him and his later novel Dracula was heavily influenced by it.

Perhaps already researching his famous novel Stoker visited the Whitby Museum, the local library and the harbor.

He was particularly interested in shipwrecks in the area, especially the Dmitry, a ship that had been shipwrecked five years earlier.

The Dmitry was a cargo vessel that had set sail from Narva, modern-day Estonia, in 1885. On October 24, the Dmitry was one of two ships run ashore at Whitby by a violent storm that came out of nowhere, according to newspaper reports at the time.

The crew of the Dmitry remained onboard the ship hoping for an opportunity to dock. Onlookers watched from the shore as “the sea beat savagely against the vessel. Her masts gave way and fell with a crash over her side, and the vessel herself began to break up.”

There is no account of how, but all seven crew members of the Dmitry were saved.

The Dmitry would later serve as the inspiration for The Demeter, the ship in Stoker’s Dracula that brings the titular character to the shores of England.

In the novel the Demeter originated in Varna (an anagram for Narva, where the Dmitry originated), and similarly carried “ballast of silver sand, with only a small amount of cargo—a number of great wooden boxes filled with mould.”

Stoker interviewed fishermen in Whitby harbor, where he was told of mysterious and not so mysterious deaths at sea. From the fishermen and gravestones in the local cemetery Stoker reportedly made note of some 90 names to use in his story, including the surname “Swales.” In the novel Dracula Stoker writes “Mr. Swales was found dead… his neck being broken.”

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN!

10 years ago today we picked up the keys for what would become The Corner House! 🥰

Let me take you back in time to September 2013, where it all began!

After an horrendous few years of illnesses and bereavements, we decided to do something that would make us happy; so we hatched a plan to buy a place in Whitby, our happy place, that we would rent out (but sometimes use ourselves).

On the way there we made a snack stop at McDonalds and decided that our criteria should be ‘something small, not much work to do or preferably ready to go, in case it wasn’t the business for us, so we could resell it quickly).

We viewed loads of potentially great places that weekend, some ready to go, some needing a bit of work (I still see some being advertised as holiday cottages, which gives me a smile at what they’ve done with them).

We’d seen about 5 places before her on that dreary, damp, cold day, a couple of which were high on my list.

I’ll be honest too, we’d only really added her to the list as a last minute decision ‘just to have a look’, as she was at the top end of our budget and much larger than we’d initially wanted.

When we walked through the door she was cold, damp, sad and lonely but something about her gave us a tingle.

Before we’d even seen both of the bedrooms we knew she was ‘the one’, despite being the total opposite of our agreed upon criteria! 🙄

She’d been on the market for years, was cold and damp, the boiler didn’t work, the gas fire didn’t work, the electric shower had condemned stickers on it, she had an old, totally unusable, cast iron bath, the roof leaked like a sieve, the windows were rotten and she hadn’t had anything done to her since the 1960’s but we loved her from day one nonetheless! 🤩

After a few days of sprucing, the old girl is ready for action but now we’ve realised that we’ve not got anyone booked in this weekend to appreciate our hard work! 😱

We've had a great weekend, bookings wise, which is fab for us and fab for the savvy guests, who know a great value place when they spot it!

It's less great if you're one of those 'well it's everything we want and it's a great price but I'll keep looking; we might find somewhere cheaper' folks, as the weeks/weekends and cheeky little gaps are getting snapped up!

So, if you're able to plan ahead, don't leave it until tomorrow; your preferred dates may be getting looked at right now (especially since we have instant online booking!)!

I absolutely love this shop and would spend hours in there if they’d let me! 🥰

Whilst our web-store takes a breather for a few days our retail store remains open for last minute purchases.
Over the next two weeks we will be open as normal including New Year’s Eve and day.
The only day we are closed is Christmas Day.
The website is available but no orders will be processed until Wednesday 27th December.

Wow, congratulations! 🤩

We did it! Quayside was voted the winner of the 'Taste Award' for casual dining at the Yorkshire Post Tourism Awards 2023 in Leeds last night! An incredible night for us and our fabulous team! We had some brilliant competition and met some lovely people. A fantastic evening indeed.

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
