A little bit more about Our Cottage

The cottage is a period terraced property in Newholm, a quiet village, two miles from Whitby. There is plenty of parking in front of the house.

Sandsend is an easy twenty minute walk down through the Raithwaite Estate exiting either down their drive or turning left to the clifftop footpath and into Sandsend.

It is a delightful walk to Whitby along the beach, except at high tide, when it is better to walk on the Cleveland Way running alongside the Whitby Golf Club and West Cliff. As you arrive at the Whale Bones and Captain Cooks monument you get a super view of the harbour, St Mary’s Church and the Abbey beyond.

Once you have walked around Whitby and gone up and down the 199 steps to the Abbey you will have earned the £10 taxi ride back to Newholm!

The accommodation consists of two double bedrooms, bathroom with bath and shower, with extra sleeping available on a bed settee if needed.

A new kitchen has been installed with a fridge and dishwasher.

There are plenty of pots and pans, nespresso coffee machine, toaster, oven stove and microwave.

A large old oak table sits six to eight people.

There are two outside sitting areas with seating available for all.

The small patio at the back catches the morning sun and the front cottage garden perfect for relaxing in the late afternoon and evening.

Parking in Whitby centre can be a nightmare during the summer months.

Out of season there is no problem and it is free.

It is walking distance the the Whitby park and ride from the cottage.

One great bonus is that food shopping is easy.

There is so much choice, with parking a breeze.

In addition to the two nearby Spars (part of the petrol stations) and the Co-op by the harbour, we now have a Lidl and both a Sainsbury’s and Aldi’s next to one another on the road to Scarborough.

Other than the beach at Sandsend, we like the one at Runswick Bay.

Two seaside villages are Robin Hoods Bay to the south and Staithes to the north.

If you catch the bus its not a bad walk back from Staithes along the Cleveland Way.

North York Moors Is a must and you can pick up the NYM Railway steam trains at various points from Egton to Pickering.

Goathland (of Hearthbeat fame) is a good starting point for lots of walks including a shorter one to the Malayan Spout waterfall. We like the tiny pub and sweet shop at Beck Hole.
