June flew by and today we are welcoming in July, summer is well and truly underway ☀️

This month, why not try our recommended walk of the month. July is a perfect time for a butterfly walk. Caukleys Bank near Nunnington is a good area for spotting a variety of species and the views into the Howardian Hills National Landscape and across the Vale of Pickering to the North York Moors make the perfect backdrop.

Looking for a seaside adventure this summer?
There are lots of shipwrecks to explore and here are some of the ones we’ve visited.

As a family we love a good adventure and I love a walk so thankfully there are lots of shipwrecks to discover along the coast. A walk with a purpose is always a win win for us and let’s face it, who doesn’t love the excitement of finding a real life shipwreck.

Some of them are really easy to find and some of them are more of a walk in a certain direction! I have added the what3words location for the more difficult ones.

Depending on the tidal range only certain wrecks will be visible and also the level of the sand will contribute to how much of the wreck you can see. On one occasion I saw the Reighton Sands wreck on a very low tide and low sand distribution and another time it was mostly hidden. Don’t get your hopes up too high.

I do need to put in a disclaimer that you must check tide times carefully before you set out to be sure not to get cut off by the tide.

Reighton Sands

Saltwick Bay
Perhaps the most impressive and photographic of the wrecks I love this adventure as it includes fossil hunting! If you walk back to Whitby you’ll also see the wreck of MV Creteblock. https://www.facebook.com/100063692104520/posts/429059739227093/?d=n

Whitby
MV Creteblock caught aground on the scar under the cliffs at Whitby. You can access this one at low tide from Whitby, heading south to Saltwick Bay.

Sandsend
A fantastic ship wreck that is only fully revealed on a super low tide (only 6 tides a year) This one isn’t easily accessed and there are cut off points on the beach if you’re walking from Sandsend so you must know your tides.
