Here's some popular North Yorkshire Superstitions & Folklore

🧹 Witches and the Moors
The North York Moors have long been associated with witchcraft. Local lore warns that witches could curse crops or bring storms — and villagers would hang iron horseshoes above doorways to keep them at bay. (Image - Danby Cottage Ref. 920738)
🔮 Superstition: Never accept food from a stranger in the moors — it might be a witch in disguise!

⛪ The Devil’s Arrows (Boroughbridge) Image - Roger Driscoll
These mysterious prehistoric standing stones are said to have been thrown by the Devil in an attempt to destroy the town of Aldborough. He missed, and the stones landed harmlessly in Boroughbridge.
🪨 Superstition: Walking between the arrows three times will bring misfortune… unless you do it backwards.

🧚 Fairy Folk & the Dales - Image: Simlinger
In some rural parts of North Yorkshire, people once believed in the 'Fair Folk', mischievous beings who could bless or curse depending on how they were treated.
🍃 Superstition: Never disturb a fairy ring (a circle of mushrooms) — it's believed to be a portal to the fairy world.

🐎 Headless Horseman of Glaisdale
A local legend tells of a headless horseman who roams the lanes of Glaisdale at night. He’s said to be the ghost of a 17th-century highwayman.
👻 Superstition: If you see a lone rider vanish into the mist — turn back the way you came.

🪦 Co**se Roads
In remote areas like Swaledale and Eskdale, certain footpaths known as co**se roads were used to carry the dead to burial grounds. Locals believed that spirits might linger on these routes.
🌫️ Superstition: Never build a house on a co**se road — it invites unrestful spirits.
