Our Heritage
Our cottages on Sandside in Whitby were originally owned by my great-great Aunt and Uncle Appleton, they lived in the property that is now named ‘Appleton House’. They were well known characters in town, often seen working together as the local window cleaners!
Dick and Esther (nee Dryden, ie Dryden Cottage) began holiday letting the neighbouring cottages themselves (long before many of the properties started!) and were always looking at ways they could improve the properties... you may notice that the block which our cottages are in is actually taller than its neighbours, and was also extended forward towards the beach... always trying to make the most of the location and maximise the space available!
Esther was a passionate supporter of the RNLI, her father and brother both volunteered on Whitby lifeboat, she tragically lost her father John Dryden in 1940 during a rescue just off Whitby.
We are proud that these properties in this special location that meant so much to Dick and Esther have been able to remain in our family.
