Unfortunately for the modern day motorists the belief is that fuels, oils and cars are much more reliable than sa

y 20 years ago. In many ways the cars are but with tighter laws on polution the modern enginges suffer by the very same way these strict emmissions are met. Fuel is so expensive yet many of the natural substances that benefited the engine have been refined out of them and they now lack sufficient detergent addatives to compensate. Oils, with more competition in the market place alot of workshops fear loosing customers on price, so use cheaper alternatives and with a wider requirement for different grades some unfortunately make the wrong choice....

Some might think that a fuel treatment is just a fuel treatment. You could not be more wrong.
We look as to why you want to treat the fuel…do you need to condition the fuel due to quality issues, more stabilisers, maybe more lubrication. We then show the correct treatment for your needs!

Oh, here’s a quick Look at BG44K vs 3 other “fuel treatments” that are commonly used. Look at the picture, zoom in and see the difference in how much carbon and fuel deposits have been removed from the spark plugs after around 19hours!

Watch out for the video I’ll post next week.

You have to go to battle everyday…

Sylvester Stallone left a message that will never be forgotten: "Let me tell you something you already know... The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place, and I don't care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. Now, if you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hits and not pointing fingers, saying you ain't where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that, and you ain't a coward. You're better than that."

Happy weekend everyone…remember to look after your rings. No one really wants to suffer blow-by or even worse a bit of seepage. Having to deal with the residue….yuk!!! You can trust BG Products to save you from that mess... EPR will get your rings clean and functioning properly while MOA for petrols/DOC for diesels with keep them functioning properly and free from yucky deposits!

Most Pistons have two compression rings and one oil control ring. Most passe ger car engines have oil rings with two rails and an expander spacer.

Piston rings do a truly remarkable job in the engine. Most engines today use two compression rings and one oil ring. The Top ring is exposed to the flame of combustion during every power stroke. In addition to sealing the tremendous combustion pressures, piston rings also help cool the piston and control oil consumption.

The Top ring controls most of the sealing of combustion. It controls peak pressures of 1000 PSI at a temperature of about 350°F ( 177°C). The second ring experiences peak pressures of 200 PSI at about 220°F (104°C), capturing what little pressures escapes past the Top ring. It also scrapes oil back down the cylinder wall where it can be returned to the crankcase. The Top ring protects the other ring, it most stop blowby, or the second ring will have to perform the task and second ring wear and increase. The Top ring is a premium ring, and the second ring is ordinary cast iron so it does not perform as well. As long as the Top ring seals, the piston stays in good condition. When excessive blowby and particles of combustion begin to leak by along with the flame, the oil ring will become stuck and plugged up and the piston and rings will rapidly deteriorate.

In modern engines oil is worked much harder than ever. More contamination, extended service intervals in tighter tolerance, higher performance engines and especially with turbos all mean more and more strain on your lubricant. Consider this though, new oil will not clean away those deposits and contaminant left behind when your oil is drained. This in turn means the new oil is contaminated and in a dirty engine….

BG EPR® Engine Performance Restoration® softens and dissolves hard-to-remove deposits from piston rings and cleans micro passageways to maintain the critical hydraulic function of components, such as valve train actuators and turbochargers, restoring fuel economy and power.

Let’s talk about wetbelts, some of the things that manufacturers don’t tell you and what this means for your car and your pocket.
Wet belts are not something new, but obviously all the current fuss about them because of the publicity around Ford is making people wonder what it’s all about. It’s important to point out here that part of my role is working with fleet operators and having created service schedules for these fleet operators has seen issues with wet belts, engines, turbo and fuel injectors in both petrol and diesel vehicles drastically reduced, so we are speaking from experience.

In simple terms the drive (cam) belt keeps the top and bottom of your engine moving in harmony. The old “Suck, Squeeze, Bang Blow” is the simple version of what we generally think happens inside your engine but there’s a but…read the but! 🚨

SUCK - opening the intake valves as the piston goes down to draws air (and fuel in a port injection engines) into your engine. 🚨 But the nasty bit is it draws in exhaust gasses from the EGR with soot plus oil vapours from the PCV circuit, now this not so lovely mixture creates deposits on the intake valves and if left untreated will cause poor air circulation in the intake and cylinder.

SQUEEZE - the valves close while the fuel and air are compressed by the rising piston. 🚨 But, while that’s going on some of this mixture is forced past the piston rings, now it starts as only a little but gets progressively worse as the engine oil gets older and more miles on your motor. Just like us the older the oil gets the slower it moves and this will then cause piston rings to stick, which sees an increase in oil consumption and fuel contamination…yep only making it even worse.

BANG 🔥 - Ignition, which must happen at an exact time, creates the explosion that drives the piston back down (this is the power that drives the crank to turn). 🚨 But if you are suffering from an issue with the SQUEEZE having been compromised the BANG just isn’t as good. You’ve guessed it, making it a whole lot worse, not only creating excessive wear inside your engine but robbing you of MPG. An excess of oil being drawn into your engine can harm injectors and cause then to suffer a carbon build up, meaning they don’t atomise as well…making it all worse.

BLOW 💨 - spent fuel and gasses must be exhausted from the engine, so as the piston rises again it now drives the dirty gasses out through the open exhaust valve, then as it closes we repeat the whole cycle again. 🚨 But (hopefully you’ve noticed a pattern by now) if you are seeing issues with SSB already covered your exhaust stroke is blowing unspent fuel and only partially combusted contaminants into your exhaust track, this causes damage to you catalytic converter and GPF (Gasoline Particulate Filter) and in the case of diesel you DPF.

Combustion is actually a chemical process and the engine converts chemical energy into mechanical energy via the crank. Inside your engine it’s like a little chemical plant with air, fuel, combustion, oil, coolant, and then the spent fuel and gasses. Now if you can’t remember your chemistry lessons, in short every chemical reaction (combustion) has a waste product. Inside your engine, we’ll keep it to carbon deposits, acidic deposits from the fuel, unspent fuel and moisture. PLEASE note, that the OEMs generally don’t make the oils and fuels you service and run your car on so it’s a very difficult area for them to control…yet they are the ones who get the finger pointed at more than most in these instances.

So for a moment, back to the wetbelts, oh yes there’s two! There’s a rubber drive belt for the oil pump as well. So oil flow, just in case you were wondering is pretty important inside your engine. Keeping components lubricated, metal surfaces protected and helping the oil to carry away contaminants, wear materials and carbon deposits to be collected in the oil filter. So this oil flow now depends on a compromised rubber belt. 🙏

Now if you’re still with us we need to look at the job the oil has to do and why changing the oil regularly is required. Now, I have typically always halved the period set out by the OEM, but new oil can not clean away the deposits left behind by the old oil…that’s just a fact. The deposits that build up inside your engine create wear and this would be generally caused by carbon build up with fuel contamination in petrol engines right behind it. However, more importantly here the acidic deposits from both unburnt and spent fuel when given some moisture creates acid (nitric in petrol and sulphur in diesel) and these deposits breakdown things like rubber seals, that keep the oil where it’s meant to be, now we also have a rubber belts in there. These acidic deposits cause the rubber to become less flexible and this logically will cause the belt to chafe.

Little bits of these drive belts break off and get caught in the oil pick up pipe. This stops oil being pumped around the engine, causing excessive wear and where fitted the turbo, but one other notable component on these modern engines is the vacuum pump which helps the brakes by reducing the pressure you need to apply on the pedal, this is often one of the issues reported before the oil pressure warning light is displayed, so it’s also a critical safety issue which is more the reason for any recalls rather than engine wear. The only way to remove these rubber deposits from the oil strainer is to manually do it, removing the sump and oil pump to clean the rubber from the strainer.

So what can you do to look after these drive belts?
1. Using the correct grade of oil is important but grade/specification of oil is not the same as quality…so avoid cheaper brands is generally a good idea. Oils have to work much harder dealing with contaminates now than they ever have.
2. Again, the service interval is very important but how you use the vehicle and the drive cycles could mean changing the oil as regularly as every 5,000miles but annually if you’re not doing the miles. This is because short drive cycles create more moisture and not having the engine run up to temperature helping to dispel some of the deposits through evaporation.
3. Using BG with each oil change…just like we have done with the fleet companies…see the picture footnotes to see how and why.

Dave just talks facts…
Not changing your oil causes problems
Sludge inside your engine creates heat, heats kills everything.
Modern engines it’s critical, the piston rings get locked up very easy.

Using BG EPR at each oil changes cleans ringland area, maintaining optimum compression and reducing oil consumption. That’s some simple facts!

Another workshop, speaking the truth.

Skeptical about “additives” because not many achieve long term results. Way to many brands simply use chemistry that will burn cleaner, buy using a thinner base fuel. This means while present in the fuel it will achieve results by creating a cleaner burn, sadly this is all that is required to label a product an “Injector cleaner”…that’s not the same as what BG do. Using chemistry that the OEMs actually endorse BG reduced deposit formation, making the engine burn the fuel better rather than making the fuel easier to burn. (This is for the average Joe to understand, the petrochemical version would put most people to sleep).

There is a continually growing understanding in the trade that something is needed to deal with the issues faced by modern vehicles, so like MRP they have a look.

Then begin to discover the difference not only in the chemistry but how we train and demonstrate the products. Then when you experience the difference you know we talk the truth.

Welcome to the global BG family!

We now stock BG Products, Inc. fuel additives and oil treatments.
We’re normally a little hesitant of some other fuel additives and treatments however BG are one of the best additive brands on the market, and after testing them in our own vehicles we can’t recommend them enough.
BG Engine performance restoration treatment is added to your old engine oil prior to draining and will now be used in every service we do to ensure we’re not putting clean fresh oil into a dirty engine.
