🔎 ID challenge!
Have you seen any American minks in the Wigan area? Let us know if you have🔍

Smaller than otters, they have chocolate brown fur with a white chin and throat.

Residing close to water, they are far braver than the secretive otter, and excellent swimmers 🐟

This week is Bees’ Needs Week

This year Bees’ Needs Week (18 – 24 July) makes a call on the public to take five simple actions to help pollinators. Councils are encouraged to share this information locally.

To sustain bee populations, people can:

· Grow more flowers, shrubs and trees
· Let gardens grow wild
· Cut grass less often
· Don’t disturb insect nest and hibernation spots
· Think carefully about whether to use pesticides
Monitoring for insects is also a great way to help scientists understand what pollinator populations look like. The Pollinator Monitoring Scheme is the first scheme in the world to generate data on the abundance of bees, hoverflies and other flower-visiting insects at a national scale. It will provide information that will help measure trends in pollinator populations and target conservation efforts. Everyone can get involved, and takes only 10 minutes observation.

Wow! A visit to Golborne Park this afternoon to check on how the meadow was fantastic and not just because the sun was shining. There were no less than 110 marsh orchids flowering in the meadow along with big patches of birds-foot trefoil, yellow rattle, red and white clover and several species of vetch. Just 2 years ago this was a rough species poor grass field which was cut once a year. Just by changing the timing of the cut and collecting the cut material, and also supplementary seeding with native wildflower species, this field is well on its way to becoming a species rich meadow.

As well as numerous flowering plants, there was an abundance of meadow brown butterflies, a small copper butterfly and a silver y moth all enjoying the meadow.

This work has been carried out under the Naturalising the Borough project with support from Lancashire Wildlife Trust, local councillors and Golborne Voice community group.

Please do visit the site and enjoy nature
