Can’t beat a stroll around the quiet lanes of the Northern Fells and then popping into the Black Lion at Ireby for a well deserved pint.

As we said in an earlier post, the local
Community is trying to buy and run the village pub. It will be great for visitors and locals alike if we can keep this lovely local pub running.

It’s a short drive from Ellwood House in Caldbeck or perfect for a visit while cycling the Northern Fells.

We are very lucky to have some cracking pubs in the North Lakes. Part of what makes the area so special.

One of our local pubs in the Northern Fells is hoping to go Community owned and run. The Black Lion in Ireby. A cracking little village pub. We look forward to them taking over and keeping the community pub in the community.

This is lovely introduction to the pub. Well worth a visit when you're staying at Ellwood House. Some great walking and cycling nearby.

Check out this breakfast buttie from the The Muddy Duck Cafe & Tearoom in Caldbeck. Just down the road from Ellwood House.

With the sunny weather we are getting, what better thing to do first thing in the morning is let the Muddy Duck do the breakfast cooking.

High Pike and Carrock Fell are the closest fells to Caldbeck village and they are quite splendid. The panoramic views in all directions are simply stunning.

And the best bit is you can walk straight from the door of Ellwood House. And you will hardly see a soul, even at this time of year. Perfect.

Caldbeck is a super location for a walking holiday in the Lake District.

Hopegill Head and Grisedale Pike from Whinlatter Pass and via Ladyside Pike - a recent excursion from Ellwood House. An outstanding fellwalk, even in March and easy to get to from our holiday cottage.

Even when it rains in the Lakes, it’s still a gorgeous place to visit.

These pics are from a trip into Borrowdale last week. Along the River Derwent, up Castle Crag (a fab viewpoint) and then along the valley to Seatiller and back along the river.

The Lake District in Winter and Spring. Gorgeous isn't it?

The Northern Fells are a fantastic part of the Lake District for walking and mountain biking. Much quieter than the central Lakes but very satisfying all the same.

This is above Dash Falls on the way to Skiddaw House. A fantastic bridleway for mountain biking and walking.

It also offers a fantastic alternative way up Skiddaw via Bakestall.

The best bit is - it’s dead easy to get to from Ellwood House holiday cottage in Caldbeck.

Popped down to the Sun Inn at Bassenthwaite back end of last week. It’s a traditional Lakes pub - either a short drive from Caldbeck or take it in on a longer walk. Nice traditional pub grub and a half decent pint!

Just check out this view of Skiddaw from their car park. Look at those colours. Just it just demand to be climbed??

We're really lucky that our holiday cottage - Ellwood House - is located in one of the prettiest villages in the Lake District - Caldbeck.

It's simply lovely around every turn. Loads of history, great pub The Oddfellows Arms and a fantastic village shop. A few other fab shops and cafe's (The Muddy Duck Cafe & Tearoom (kiosk currently, but new cafe opening soon), Watermill Cafe and loads of lovely walks in beautiful countryside roundabout.

And if you like the fells, High Pike and the rest of the Northern Fells are simply glorious.

The best bit is - we're much quieter and relaxed than the rest of the Lake District!!

How about some late season mountain biking in the Lake District?

Fabulous sunsets are what you get from the Northern Fells at this time of year.

These three below are from June 2022. Gorgeous aren't they?

The best place to view them is from Caldbeck Common looking towards Scotland - or the top of Binsey. The colours as the sun dips below the hills of Dumfries and Galloway are just stunning.

High Pike is on view from Elwood House and is the nearest fell to Caldbeck. It can be climbed via many different routes and it’s a fairly steady climb but the views from the top on a clear day are outstanding.

Views across the Northern Fells to Skiddaw and Blencathra. Across to Scotland and over the North Pennines and Eden Valley. Absolutely gorgeous!!

And you can walk from our door to High Pike.

We have some of the best fellwalking available in the Lakes in this area.
