The Muddy Duck Cafe Bar opens today in Caldbeck. It's been a long time coming but we think it will have been worth the wait. Its brilliant that we have another great food and drink venue in the village. Great for visitors and great for locals too. We're sure the food will be brilliant.

Ellwood House would like to wish everyone involved the very best of luck with this venture. We'll be down there soon and we'll be making our cottage customers aware of this fab new venue in Caldbeck.

When you visit the North Lakes, you'll discover some fantastic places to visit.

For example, the Bassenthwaite Lake Station.

It's a café and special visitor attraction surrounded by nature in the heart of the North Lakes. Opposite Dubwath Silver Meadows nature reserve. Enjoy breakfast, lunch or a spectacular afternoon tea aboard the replica Orient Express train. It's popular so booking advised!!

A fantastic video of 2 wild fell ponies on an afternoon walk - on a footpath plodding up to the top of High Pike. They were clearly on a mission - their coats were matted with sweat. I’ve never seen them anywhere else but on the commons around Caldbeck.

Another good reason to visit the Northern Fells and stay at Ellwood House in 2025.

Even in winter, the Lake District is a stunning place to visit!! These pics were taken down by Keswick and the wonderful viewpoint that is Friar’s Crag.

Honister Pass Slate Mine nr Buttermere is a fantastic place to visit when staying at our holiday cottage. Whatever the weather!

These pics were taken this weekend.

Combine the visit with the relatively easy walk up Fleetwith Pike for one of the best views in the Lake District.

Just the road to get here is exciting as it twists and turns up the 25% slopes.

There are so many activities at Honister Slate Mine, it’s worth checking out their social and website for details.

The The Oddfellows Arms Caldbeck is our local pub in the village.

The "Oddies" offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, offers a fine range of local real ales, it's dog friendly and serves great home cooked food. Sunday lunch is especially good and they hold regular proper pizza evenings.

On sunny evenings in the summer there is a lovely beer garden and in winter, the cosy fire is always going.

The Oak at Curthwaite is another great local pub, undergoing a new lease of life under new management. It’s looking really promising and it’s great that another local pub is going to be available to our guests at Ellwood House.

It's always been a really goof food pub over the years and we're delighted this looks like its going to continue and get even better.

It's a short drive from Caldbeck and there are some lovely quiet walks to be had nearby.

We're keen to support the Black Lion Community Group's attempt to buy one of our fabulous local pubs in Ireby for the local community.

This should be a brilliant night of music and fun.

Out of season breaks in the Lake District. These pics were taken in late November near Honister Pass and Dale Head. Just goes to show how good the weather can be, even in then winter season.

Can’t beat a stroll around the quiet lanes of the Northern Fells and then popping into the Black Lion at Ireby for a well deserved pint.

As we said in an earlier post, the local
Community is trying to buy and run the village pub. It will be great for visitors and locals alike if we can keep this lovely local pub running.

It’s a short drive from Ellwood House in Caldbeck or perfect for a visit while cycling the Northern Fells.
