Here’s to strong women like .

Beatrix fought for what she cared about - traditional farming, a strong sense of community, conservation and Herdwick sheep. Never intimidated in a male dominated world, Beatrix confidently spoke out on what she believed in

Beatrix’s creative talent combined with her determination, ambition from an early age and impressive business acumen, meant she gifted 4000 acres and 14 Lakeland farms to the National Trust, when she died.

One such farm was nearby Troutbeck Park. Under threat of being split up and developed, Beatrix bought this farm in 1923. Beatrix decided to run the farm herself with the help of shepherd George Walker. Beatrix used the farm as a setting for the Fairy Caravan stories and some of her writing was done in a little study at the farm.

The heat wave is here, so to cool down pop into Staveley to Kimi's Artisan Gelato

This is the best ice cream for miles around and John and his team always have time for a jolly chat while lovingly scooping your chosen flavour.

Recommendations from the South Stonethwaite Cottage are Raspberry Pavlova, Banofee Pie and Kinder Buano. You can even make up your own takeaway tub with a mix of your favourite flavours or order a delivery.

John tells me Gelato is better for you – fewer calories, less sugar and low fat content 🤗 and where does the name come from? John’s beautiful Chocolate Labrador, named after the famous racing driver.

Open every day Wednesday – Sunday 12-6.

For low level walks, Staveley only a 15 minute drive from Troutbeck provides countless options. The 1 hour walk round The Lost Valley is a family favourite, because it can be done in any weather after which you can relax in the Beer Garden at the The Eagle and Child Inn or Wilf's Cafe. Hopefully you can’t go wrong with our directions below

Sometimes the Mountains just have to wait. A couple of Sundays ago, at 7.30am, I was shoehorning myself into a wet suit, ready to experience Paddle-boarding for the first time. We could not have picked a better time - warm sunshine, flat calm waters of Windermere and the tranquility of Graythwaite Estates.

Matt from Graythwaite Adventure was superb at managing an overexcited 11 year old who never stopped talking and a slightly nervous Mum with no sense of balance. Against all odds, Matt had us both standing up in no time, and despite falling backwards off the board twice, I have to say it was amazing way to see the Lake and great fun, especially when Matt threw in a head stand for extra entertainment.

The Watermill Inn, Ings , a multi award winning Camra pub at Ings was on top of their game today - drinks orders at your table, lots of sanitising of tables and good food, gorgeous chilli con carne, scampi and chips and real ale brewed at the pub. Sat outside in the sunshine after a long walk. Just 10 minutes drive from South Stonethwaite Cottage at Troutbeck, especially if you take the Moorhowe Road short cut.

After 3 months in splendid isolation, it's been a busy few days for South Stonethwaite Cottage. It now has risk assessments, PPE and a welcome pack of wine and sanitiser, a clean chimney and even cleaner windows, a w**d free garden, super hygienic surfaces plus a Visit England We're Good to Go certificate.

Thank you Lisa Ashworth and Nicola Maloney for your helping hands and Pure Lakes Skincare for the grapefruit and lemongrass sanitiser.

And what's more, nearby Troutbeck Village Shop is now open 7 days a week. It was a welcome sight to see Lynn and her delicious sandwiches and cakes with social distancing sorted. Entertainment was provided by Pip Simpson as he ushered his ewes passed ready for their annual hair cut.
