The History Of Mountain Goat
It all started in early 1972. Founder Chris Taylor applied to the Transport Commissioners to operate a 5 times a day service from Bowness to Glenridding between Easter and the end of October. Working together with William Hudson from Hawkshead, the Lake District Minibus Company Limited was formed.
The name, Mountain Goat, came from an early passenger as they related the buses climbing over the passes similar to that of a Mountain Goat. For the first time for many a years, Goats were seen back in the Lake District, all be it mechanical ones this time.
By 1974 the recipe for tourist travel was established. Passengers liked to get around on a bus and hear stories from the drivers. Many arrivals at hotels were encouraged to leave the car in the car park and explore the area in the care of a driver guide. Private Hire meant that arrivals from all over the UK came by coach, stayed in a number of local hotels and enjoyed a tour package with Mountain Goat. Working in concert with a number of hotels and guest houses, Mountain Goat Holidays and Breaks enticed hundreds of people a year to visit the area, many of them single and looking to return to places they had visited in their youth.
Nearly 50 years later Mountain Goat are still the leading sightseeing operator in The Lake District. The range of services and tours has grown, the buses are newer, faces and come and gone but the core values of community spirit, love of the UK’s national parks and delivering outstanding service remain.
