❄️ FREE things to do with the kids in Windsor this February Half Term!

👣 If you’re wanting to stretch your legs, get some fresh air AND see some of the most iconic buildings and landmarks in Windsor town centre this half term… here a few Top Tips, that are FREE or low cost:

🔹 Conquer the The Long Walk; burn off some energy and see if you can reach the iconic Copper Horse statue at the far end... for a shorter walk head out past the Two Brewers Pub and look up, left, at Cambridge Gate – an iconic view of Windsor Castle.

🔹Grab a selfie with the life-sized Lego Guard in the Award-winning Daniel Toy Department, it is a one off piece, built especially for Daniel Department Store!

🔹Explore Eton - remembering to keep looking up and try to locate the famous "man on the wall" (Edge II) sculpture by Antony Gormley.

🔹Take a walk by the river to feed the swans; they are hungry and will be grateful for bread, defrosted frozen peas, spinach leaves and swan pellets (available for a small price from French Brothers ticket office)

🔹Snap a selfie and learn about the Hawker Hurricane replica plane, by Alexandra Gardens.

🔹Have a run around the Royal Windsor Maze - located near Jubilee Fountain in the Goswells; small children love following the tiled path.

🔹Download a copy of the Queens Walkway and follow the trail of 63 bronze plaques / approx. 4 miles stroll.

🔹Watch the Guards marching on their way to / from the Castle, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays – for complete detail, see schedule in Bio or on website.

🔹Call in to the Windsor & Royal Borough Museum – open Tuesday and Wednesdays learn about Windsor over the centuries

🔹Take a guided tour of the Windsor Guildhall – view countless paintings and a glimpse of this famous wedding venue, where the King Charles and Camilla got married 20 years ago.

🔹Search for Windsor's famous pavement clock - here's a clue, its somewhere near the Castle!

🔹Grab a hot chocolate or delicious crepe from Fortescues, a hidden treasure on Church Street up on Guildhall Island.

The Round Tower, Windsor Castle.

King Henry I's grandson became King Henry II in 1154 and became known as the Builder King. By 1170 over half a mile of the olden wooden defences were replaced with stone walls, towers and the building of the Round Tower started.

The stone is local, from Bagshot Heath, south of Windsor. It is unique in that it cleans itself in the rain.

Originally the Round Tower was half the height it is today. King George IV in the 1820s added 10m (33 feet) to make the castle 'more romantic'.

The iconic view of the Round Tower, Windsor Castle with the Diamond Jubilee fountain, in the foreground.

Designed by Mark Oliver on land purchased for the National Trust in 1910, the 25-metre-long fountain opened in 2012 for HM Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee and consists of a sceptre-like canal and a stone bowl geyser where 60 jets of water form the shape of St Edward’s Crown.

💂🏼‍♂️ CHANGE to February Guard March schedule:

🥁 Please note that there will be NO ceremonial guard march tomorrow, 4th February.

🇬🇧 The days on which the guards march along Windsor's streets and into Windsor Castle are scheduled by the British Army and can change every month, and at short notice. A band usually accompanies the guards, although this is subject to weather conditions. The plan for the rest of February, currently stands as:

Thu 6th Feb: 22 Signal Regiment with Band and Bugles of The Rifles
Sat 8th Feb: Number 7 Company Coldstream Guards with Band and Bugles of The Rifles
Tue 11th Feb: 22 Signal Regiment with Band and Bugles of The Rifles
Thu 13th Feb: F Company Scots Guards with Band and Bugles of The Rifles
Sat 15th Feb: 22 Signal Regiment with Band and Bugles of The Rifles
Tue 18th Feb: 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards with Band and Bugles of The Rifles
Thu 20th Feb: 22 Signal Regimentwith Band of the Household Cavalry
Sat 22nd Feb: Number 12 Company Irish Guards with Pipes of Number 12 Company Irish Guards
Tue 25th Feb: 22 Signal Regiment with Pipes Number 12 Company Irish Guards
Thu 27th Feb: Number 12 Company Irish Guards with Pipes of Number 12 Company Irish Guards

💂🏼‍♂️ The guards march from Victoria Barracks on Sheet Street. The best places to see them are on Windsor High Street or on the Corn Exchange under Windsor Guildhall. They leave the barracks at 10.45 for actual Guard Change Ceremony inside the Castle at 11am. You can watch the old guard leave the Castle and return to the barracks around 11.10am.

If you want to see the actual ‘changing’ ceremony you need to buy an entrance ticket to Windsor Castle and allow plenty of time to get into the Castle. Ticket link in our Bio ⬆️ or link below.

Our website has been updated, 3.2.25 to reflect this change:

🥐 Today is National Croissant Day! (who knew there was such a thing!) ...

🥐 It's never too late in the day for a freshly baked croissant; this one is a cinnamon special from Windsor's family owned Heidi Bakery; and they are delicious!

🥐 If you're visiting Windsor Castle and arriving by coach or train, Heidi Bakery are perfectly situated for you in the heart of Windsor Royal - close to Windsor & Eton Central Railway station, and on the route from the coach park up to the Castle.

🛍️ Windsor Royal integrates the former Windsor Yards and Windsor Royal Station Shopping Centres.

🛍️ After a visit to the Castle you can shop, play, dine and more in one location, with a brilliant range of retailers, restaurants and cafes all in one central location.

🛍️ You'll also find a larger Heidi Bakery with extensive seating area on the ground floor of Daniel Department Store.
