A CORONATION: WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG!

To celebrate the coronation of King Charles III join us on a gentle stroll around Windsor highlighting stories of coronations over the last 1,000 years.

We’ll focus on the ones that didn’t quite go to plan!

The monarch who came down with appendicitis before the ceremony; one who refused to sit on the coronation chair; one who had to be carried up the aisle and other disasters such as falling bishops, coronation rings being put on wrong fingers and the Queen Consort who was refused entry to her own coronation.

Walk starts at Windsor Guildhall on
Saturday 15th April at 2pm
Sunday 16th April at 2pm
Saturday 29th April at 11am
Sunday 30th April at 2pm

Tickets available from the Tourist Information Centre at Windsor Guildhall or online at www.Windsor.gov.uk and put coronation into search box.

Tickets £13.50 per adult, £10 advantage card holders, under 17s £5

Prince Philip: A Celebration
We visited the exhibition in the Lantern Lobby and St George’s Hall of the state apartments. It is excellent and we especially liked the beautiful diamond bracelet Prince Philip gave the Queen on their wedding day, the bracelet made with diamonds from his mother’s tiara.
Look out too for his desk from Buckingham Palace complete with antiquated phone system he used until the late 1990s!
But to cap everything else is the wonderful painting by Ralph Heimans to mark the Duke’s retirement from public life in 2017.
Entry to exhibition is included with a Windsor Castle ticket. On until 20th September 2021.

PLAGUE, PESTILENCE AND POTIONS

Find out about Windsor’s history of infectious disease outbreaks from the 1300s to the present day.

See the site of Elizabeth I’s new gallows constructed during a plague outbreak in 1563. When she said lockdown, she really meant lockdown!

The house where Windsor’s first dispensary/hospital for the sick poor of the town and the vaccination hub during a smallpox outbreak in 1827.

Why Eton schoolboys were made to smoke during a plague outbreak and how certain “businesses” in the town took advantage of the myth that you couldn’t catch two diseases at the same time. Fake news is nothing new.

Windsor Castle has always been a refuge for monarchs during disease outbreaks and hear how some tragically didn’t escape illness.

Walks start at 11am from the Guildhall on May 1st/2nd/3rd/8th/15th/16th.
£12.50 per person.
Maximum group size of 6.
Everyone will be given a receiver and single use disposable ear bud to listen to the tour guide and to ensure social distancing.

Plague, pestilence and potions

Our new 90 minute guided walk around medical Windsor is coming soon......

Did you know:
In the mid 1800s only 400 out of 3,000 Windsor households had piped water.
Queen Anne had her own spring water brought to the castle each day by donkey. The spring was in Chalvey.
The last well was installed in 1852 opposite Windsor and Eton Riverside station.
A cholera outbreak in the town in the 1840s caused 1,000 cases and 25 deaths.

All you ever needed to know about Windsor’s disease past including the Black Death, smallpox, influenza and typhoid.

The 90 minute walk is £12.50 per person and will be bookable via www.Windsor.gov.uk what’s on. The meeting point will be at the Guildhall at 11am on selected dates just as soon as we can get going.

Windsor Tourist Guides Ltd will operate a COVID secure guiding audio system where the guide will wear a microphone and clients listen through a disposable single ear bud receiver system to ensure social distancing.
