Yay! Just heard the first chiff chaff of the year. That, combined with nearly daily bumblebee noises, surely heralds the lighter, warmer months. No picture, just the call, so here's the RSPB's page on these, our first spring migrants.

The fox is back - Maria Mor took these slightly distant phone pictures from Honeysuckle Lodge balcony this afternoon. It was hunting small mammals in the grass we've left long over winter. It looks in reasonable shape - just not as glorious as summer pictures with lush grass and flowers!

It's a stunning day out there, but in this cold snap not everyone is keen on being woken up. We're strimming super carefully around the lodges, in case of hibernating hedgehogs, or dormice. This lovely toad we found the other day when we were weeding. We relocated it to the poly tunnel where it's a shade warmer and there might also be some food.

A small step in the right seasonal direction... But round the corner, just out of sight...OMG it's going to take until Xmas.

The leaves go to mulch under the willows at Balebarn Lodge, where they'll still look pretty for a few weeks more, and the soil organisms can move in.

In autumn, when you get in close, sometimes you spot what was there all along. This dormouse summer breeding nest was in bramble that we strimmed back along the edge of the ecolodge field. And pulling bullrush out of the fishing pond turned up a harvest mouse nest woven among the upright stems. Both nests were empty, but both were good finds.

It's a night for a celebratory vegan take out from Okehampton Community Kitchen Thank you! It's lovely. We're not vegan, but we eat a lot of vegan food, and it's important to us to be able to keep an eye on the ethics when not cooking for ourselves.

We're growing next year's butterflies! We won't be pulling up these nettles just yet. But we did cut them earlier in the summer, so these caterpillars are thriving on the regrowth. Cropping your nettles can be a way to help late summer species.

Another joins us here at Wheatland Farm's Devon Eco Lodges. This one has been looked after by Pam from Greatfield Hedgehog Rescue near and needed a release site near . We have several young guests here this weekend, and it was great for them to be able to see the hedgehog up close. She started off completely balled up and spiky, but then struck a snout out. She'll have her box in the orchard until she's ready to wander off exploring on her own.

Holidays With Heart - Wheatland Farm

Wheatland Farm is a conservation project in the glorious Devon Countryside, and when you stay you’re automatically part of it. That’s because it’s our 5 low carbon lodges and cottage that fund wildlife management across our 21 acres. With about 200 species of flowering plants, 50+ species of birds, deer, foxes, badgers and masses of butterflies and dragonflies, there’s wildlife to spot all year round. Take your time, reconnect, and know you’re part of something positive.

Wheatland Farm is a Finalist in the 2019 Devon Tourism Awards, Ethical Responsible and Sustainable Category.
