September brings Heritage Open Days
which this year is from 6-15 September and is England's largest community led festival of history and culture, involving thousands of local volunteers and organisations across the country.

Ford & Etal is rich in heritage, community and history so why not visit us at Ford & Etal to learn about and see hidden gems and try out new experiences - all of which are FREE to explore. What will you be adding to your list of places to visit this September? Why not visit the stunning Pre-Raphaelite murals at Lady Waterford Hall telling the fascinating story of the gifted person who created them Louisa Anne, Lady Waterford (1818-1891) or the ruins of Etal Castle of maybe the traditional milling at Heatherslaw Cornmill. Today is International Dog Day - a reminder that both The Hemmel and The Granary are dog friendly. There are walks direct from the cottages and we have some amazing countryside, a national park and some of the most beautiful unspoilt beaches here in north Northumberland.

Here is our current pack including pet lamb Miss Miffy - she thinks she’s a dog too!!

If you are at a loose end this Saturday, we have spaces for both our ever-popular Monster Pot and new Castle Building workshops. Neither require previous experience and are suitable for all ages, and give participants an opportunity to be creative and mindful in a beautiful part of Northumberland. Finished pots, once fired and glazed, can be collected from the studio in Ford Village, or they can be posted out! So if you aren’t lucky enough to live here, but are lucky enough to be visiting, we can reunite you with your pottery creations, and you’ll get a permanent reminder through the post of your time in the pottery and Northumberland.

Whilst the weather has been a tad unpredictable so far this summer, it’s proved a bonus for establishing the new seed on our second phase of the wild flower meadow, which surrounds The Hemmel. 🤞🏻we get warmer temperatures and some 🌞 soon.

Here we have waymarked walks to help you explore the countryside. These can be downloaded online or, if you prefer, you can pick up the leaflets in our Visitor Centre at Heatherslaw and at tearooms in Ford and Etal where you can charge up your batteries pre-walk with tea and cake!
Please do bring your doggy chums along, they'll love it here, but we ask you to please follow the countryside code. This is a very bad year for ticks right across the UK, so do check your dogs over after any countryside walk to see if they have picked up any undesirable acquaintances.

Delighted to see our wild flower meadow growing back so well. In a few weeks time we should see the first flowers. Mr C has completed phase two of seed sowing, on the bank at the back of The Hemmel, with a pollen and nectar mix. That should keep the bees and butterflies happy and completely immerse The Hemmel in beautiful wild flowers 🌻🌼🌸🐝🦋❤️

The swallows returned earlier this week to West Moneylaws. A whole 7 days earlier than last year. They are fascinating to watch as they build their nests, raise their young and perform the most daredevil aerobic manoeuvres ❤️
