‘When something is partly under your control but isn't, then you have the same sort of relationship with it as when you have someone you love — some other person. They're partly under your control because they've agreed to live with you, go along with you and so on, but also they're not! And the measure to which they're not is the measure to which they seem really alive to you.’

It's time to liberate your lawn! 🐝🌱🦋

We are giving nature a helping hand by supporting Plantlife: saving wild plants's No Mow May at our four sites across Scotland. Join us in taking part in the annual campaign, leaving your lawn mower behind this month to allow your lawn to thrive.

Richard Baines, curator at Logan Botanic Garden, explains that "not cutting your grass for one month will increase the abundance and diversity of bees which we need to pollinate and produce more flowers... Bees, moths, hedgehogs and birds need long grass to thrive."

Plantlife’s campaign doesn’t ask you to do much. In fact, it asks you to not do anything at all… Just lock up your lawnmower on May 1st and let the wild flowers in your lawn bloom until the end of the month, providing a feast of nectar for our hungry pollinators.

Not many people could claim that they have single-handedly enabled a species to survive. In the Eastern Caribbean country of Anguilla, however, one man has dedicated over 20 years to ensuring the continued existence of a critically endangered lizard.

Episode 5. Bill Potter

Tom talks with Bill Potter who breeds the Greenholme ponies on Birkbeck Common.

Having been bred and reared in the harsh conditions of Shap, they are tremendously hardy and will do well in any situation. Some of the mares have never been handled and live in feral conditions, trusting to their instincts in hard weather; In a recent wildness survey, the Greenholme ponies came in the top 5% of wild equines in Europe.
