Hemsby Lifeboat

Hemsby Broads Rescue was paged last night at 22:15 to reports of a woman in the water near Irstead on the River Ant. Also paged were Winterton and Bacton Coastguard teams. The woman had fallen from her cruiser and despite attempts to retrieve her from the river the other two occupants onboard were unable to recover her from the water.
While in transit to our selected launch point at Ludham Bridge, we were made aware that the condition of the casualty in the water had worsened, making it vital that we expedited the rescue. Hemsby Broads Rescue was quickly in the water and on scene. It was clear the casualty was struggling to stay afloat and remain fully conscious.
The rescue boat was manoeuvred to safely deposit two crew members to the casualty boat and with the remaining crew recover the casualty to the rescue boat. At this time, she was being prevented from drowning with the use of a life ring and rope held with some effort by one of the persons onboard the casualty vessel.
Once the casualty was out of the water crew administered immediate aid and transported the casualty to the RV point where the Coastguard teams assisted in the recovery of the casualty to a safe area on dryland and continued with the care of the casualty while the Ambulance team were on route.
Assisted by the coastguard, the casualty vessel with the other two persons on board was also relocated to the RV so that the occupants could be assessed and treated for mild shock. Once the casualties were in the care of the medical team, Hemsby Broads Rescue was stood down and retuned to base.
Our thanks to the local resident and fisherman who offered assistance at the RV and to the crew who remained at the station and assisted with the preparation of our equipment for the next emergency. The crew eventually returned home just before 3am this morning.
While we were pleased to see the use of the life ring to keep the casualty afloat it is so very important that lifejackets are worn at all times when on or near the water on the Norfolk Broads. There is no doubt that the wearing of lifejackets saves lives.
