Fully Sustainable, Revolutionary Project Well Underway!

Recently, Blakedown Sport and Play have been working alongside Ribblesdale School and Edel Grass - Play the world to undertake a complete resurfacing of the school’s synthetic sports pitch. The project transforms the existing second-generation sand-filled surface into a state-of-the-art, fully sustainable 3G sports pitch for football and non-contact sports, thanks to closed-loop recycling.

Ribblesdale School emphasised sustainability as a top priority, so the choice of carpet was the revolutionary Edel Athmos surface, the first of its kind in the UK.

What makes it sustainable?

The selected Edel Athmos carpet features a groundbreaking dual-component yarn structure, crafted with 50% end-of-life recycled turf materials, resulting in a 43% overall reduction in environmental impact.
The Edel Athmos surface also incorperates Edel's new Xero backing compound; a renewable alternative to original latex backing used in synthetic grass manufacture, made with 43% end-of-life recycled turf components.

As the images above demonstrate, the project is nearing completion, and we are excited to see how the students will benefit from this exceptional facility once it is complete.

🏀 Basketball Refurbishments 🏀

Blakedown S&P have been awarded a contract with Birmingham City Council to upgrade 17no Basketball Courts throughout the City.

Hamstead Park is one of the many refurbishments that look to regenerate life into the old basketball facilities.

Showcasing how the Purple and Grey colour scheme brings the facility to life, this video demonstrates how new equipment and acrylic coating can really transform a facility.

It has been great to work alongside Birmingham City Council and the Landscape Practice Group.

We hope the upgrades to all facilities on the contract can benefit the local communities of Birmingham for years to come.

What happens to your old synthetic (3G/2G) pitch during a resurface?

For many of our resurface projects, we partner up with Sportex group to ensure that a facility’s old surface is recycled in a compliant and fully traceable process.

Pictured above are just 3 of the many happy clients who chose for us to work alongside Sportex to ensure their project benefitted the environment.

How is this traceable process done?

Step 1: The surface is cut, rolled, bagged, and transported to Sportex’s recycling plant.

Step 2: The sand (and rubber if 3G) will be removed and prepared for reuse in new pitches.

Step 3: The remaining material (yarn and backing) is shredded, cleaned, and processed to produce sustainable recycled plastic kickboards, which are resold back into the industry.

Here are some images from our recently completed 3G resurfacing project at Summerhill School , Kingswinford.

It has been fantastic to work again with a repeat client after we completed the original pitch in February 2014 , we are thrilled the school chose to work with us once again.

The project was programmed and completed to ensure its completion for the new term .

The pitch was resurfaced with TigerTurf Championship 40mm carpet and SBR infill, and we are excited to see how the students enjoy it when they return from their summer break.

Multi-Faceted Project!

Here are images from our multi-faceted project for Emanuel School at Blagdons Sports Ground.

Delivered over the last year, the project has included multiple aspects of construction:

-A full-size, new-build FIH Category 3 standard hockey pitch, with
associated fencing, floodlighting, and scoreboard systems. 🏑

-Three synthetic cricket wickets with fencing and netting. 🏏

-A brand-new car park with the integration of EV charging infrastructure and charging points. 🚗 🔌

-A three-court Multi-Use Games Area marked for multiple sports. 🎾

-Site-wide landscaping, including footpaths, storage infrastructure, and new roadway. 👷‍♂️

It has been fantastic to be part of such a brilliant project that allowed Blakedown to create so many different aspects.

We hope the students at Emanuel School and the local community benefit from this facility for many years to come.

LARGE PROJECT FOR GLENTHORNE HIGH SCHOOL!

Here are some construction images of our progress at Glenthorne High School.

In what promises to be a complete transformation for the school, here is a summary of what is yet to come:

-Construction of a brand new 4G synthetic 5v5 pitch.

-Construction of a brand new double court Needlepunch MUGA lined for Netball and Basketball

-Construction of a Special Educational and Disability Needs play area.

-Resurfacing and colour-coating of existing macadam courts.

-New fencing and floodlighting, with integrated CCTV system.

-Site-wide landscaping improvements including arboricultural works and resin bound gravel surfacing.

2 BRAND NEW PITCHES FOR Bromley FC !

Blakedown Sport & Play are proud to show off drone images captured from our new development for Bromley Football Club.

The project is close to delivering two new training pitches. Specifically, one pitch will be a full-size 11v11 3G pitch for football, while the other will be a 9v9/7v7 3G pitch to cater to the younger development players.

It has been fantastic to work alongside Bromley FC again, and we look forward to finishing the project and contributing to the future of the club and community.

Fantastic Progress…

Further progress has been made at our fabulous double hockey pitch project for Taunton School with the vibrant Tiger Turf Evo Pro carpet now installed for both pitches.

At the time these images were taken, the infill of the sand was underway to create a top-quality playing surface for the players.

Still to come with this project:

-Completion of sand infill and brush to create an even distribution.

-Completion of fencing installation.

-Completion of surrounding earthworks, tarmac, and landscaping.

-Installation of the surround kickboard system.

Project Update! ⚽

We are excited to announce that work is well underway on our resurfacing project for Accrington and Rossendale College.

We started with the lift and removal of the original 3G surface. The shockpad was then cleaned, restored, and resurfaced with a brand-new Edel Diamondblade 40-15 surface, meeting FIFA Quality Pro standards.

Our contracts Director , Tony Farmer , was very pleased to be invited to the official opening of the new 3G pitch, changing facilities and community space at Underhill Park , Mumbles this weekend.

There was a wonderful turnout for the event organised by the Go Underhill team.

From its early roots , Blakedown worked closely with the client, Mumbles Community Association, to design and build the World Rugby and FIFA certified pitch .

Opened by Swansea City legend Alan Curtis, the day offered many junior teams from across the community a chance to show off their skills during the event.

It was a pleasure working with such a great client to deliver this wonderful project.

Tennis court Refurbishment….

As we move into our final week of Wimbledon we are keen to showcase this short video from our recent multi-court refurbishment at Whitehorse Tennis and Leisure Centre.
This short video shows the project in closer detail emphasising the new additions to the facility:

-Brand new tennis nets.

Project Complete!

Our multi-court refurbishment at White Horse tennis Leisure and Tennis Centre, Abingdon, has recently been upgraded with a new blue branded netting.

This netting gives the courts an extra level of quality and privacy, making any player feel like a pro.

Surfaced with the Edel Padel Pro carpet, this facility now provides a top-level playing experience. We hope the Tennis Centre continues to benefit from the courts for years to come.

Significant progress has been made on our fabulous double hockey pitch project at Taunton School !

Both pitches have been constructed with subbase, kerbs, and an engineered tarmac base as carpet installation approaches completion.

Pitch 1 already thrives with the blue and red colour scheme, awaiting sand infill, while Pitch 2 closely awaits the installation of the TigerTurf Evo Pro surface.

The construction of the floodlighting system, fencing, and surrounding earthworks is significantly underway.

We are pleased to announce that we have been awarded a project with Framlingham College and have started on site!

This project will involve a full-size hockey pitch reconstruction to ensure the school’s pitch continues to meet elite standards.

Once the reconstruction is complete, the facility will be finished with a high-quality Edel ID sand-obscured carpet, which is the only sand-dressed surface to feature Thermofixed Knit-D-Kit yarn technology.

This unique surface combines the characteristics of a traditional sand-dressed field with the aesthetics of a water-based field.

Here are some images of our newly completed resurfacing project at Southgate Hockey Club, Barnet.

The project included the removal of the old carpet and shockpad, which was then replaced with a brand new 15mm in-situ shockpad and non-filled water-based playing surface.

The carpet selected was Edel's ID 14-30 system and the pitch now looks fresher than ever.

It has been fantastic to work with Southgate Hockey Club again, and we hope the hockey centre continues to benefit from this great facility.

Here is a picture of our brand new MUGA and footpath project for St Thomas Aquinas Catholic School in Stoke on Trent;

With just some soft landscaping and reinstatement work to be finished, it is great to see first hand how the school has benefitted from a facility like this.

The MUGA build consisted of sand dressed Edel TX Energy 18-22 laid onto a 15mm insitu shockpad and macadam base.

Marked for various sports it is the perfect facility for the children to be able to develop their various skills.

Since 2022, Blakedown have been recognised as a FIH certified field builder.

By definition of the International Hockey Federation (FIH)

“FIH Certified Field Builders are companies that specialise in building hockey fields. The companies have a proven ability to construct fields to the standards the game requires. They have appropriate in-house civil engineering expertise for the design and construction of 11-a-side and Hockey 5s fields, operate quality management systems to ensure consistency in their work and provide comprehensive maintenance advice to their customers.”

That’s not Wimbledon?..

Here are recent images following the refurbishment of multiple Tennis Courts at White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre, Abingdon.

Starting with the lift and disposal offsite of the original carpet, the underlying tarmac base was prepared to ensure correct tolerances and was then surfaced with EDEl Padel Pro carpet to create the vibrant playing surface you can see pictured.

We trust the Leisure Centre will benefit from the improved surfacing.

This video from Trinity High School School , Redditch, showcases a glimpse at the various stages undertaken throughout a resurface project.

The project started with an old sand-dressed pitch, overgrown with vegetation and ended with a vibrant full size 3G football pitch, accompanied with brand new fencing and kickboards.

The original playing surface was removed and recycled with the work of Sportex Group , to ensure as much of the surface can be retained and reused as possible.

The pitch, topped with TigerTurf Premier Pro Elite 50 with sand and SBR infill, has already received brilliant client feedback:

"Blakedown were professional, organised and easy to work with from start to finish of our new 3G TigerTurf Astro pitch. In spite of the awful weather, they finished on time and we are delighted with the final product. I couldn’t be happier."

PROJECT ANNOUNCEMENT – Another Step Towards a Greener Pitch...

We are pleased to announce that we have commenced work at Regent High School, London.

This project will feature a Non-SBR performance infill 3G surface, making it one of only a handful in the UK to date.

The Edel Soccer Twinblade 35/18 FPT-Z, installed on the Trocellen XC7012 shock pad, eliminates the need for SBR (Rubber Crumb), which will be banned in the EU from 2031.

Project Update: Last week, our site team installed the Brock infill into the new 3G pitch at Cardinal Newman Catholic School in East Sussex. Once completed, this project will feature a new World Rugby and FIFA Quality Standard 3G pitch with a biodegradable infill, extensive tree works, retaining walls, car parks with EV charging points, changing rooms, and three synthetic cricket facilities. We are looking forward to completing and handing over this magnificent facility to the school.

Earlier this year we visited our project at Underhill Park in Swansea. The full-size World Rugby and FIFA-Quality standard pitch is a hub for the community. The new build project consisted of extensive groundworks, an engineered tarmac base, topped with a 20mm insitu shock pad and Polytan’s LigaTurf Legend Pro 260 18/4 carpet. This was then lined for both rugby and football and was completed with SBR and sand infill. Our project at Holford Drive Community Sports Hub is almost complete. Once the sand infill has been installed into that glowing Playrite sports surface, and the surrounding landscaping complete we will be ready to hand this fantastic facility over to the community. Last week we revisited Oaklands College in St Albans, 3 years after we constructed this new 3G pitch. The elite level 60mm 3G surface is still looking just as brilliant as the day it was installed. Oaklands College

The second phase at Surbiton Hockey Club has now been complete. The clubs new training pitch will increase participation for local schools and junior club members. This pitch will also free up their newly resurfaced two full size pitches for their senior teams. We continue to receive great feedback on the two recent resurfaced Edel ID. Water-based surfaces from the club which has some of the UKs most elite hockey players! We are now looking forward to working with the club on the next phase of their project.
