Yarm, North Riding of Yorkshire - April, 1974

A 13-year-old Paul Kirkwood with his brother in front of the large stone signage, proudly proclaiming YARM - NORTH RIDING YORKSHIRE.

On April Fool’s Day in 1974, significant boundary changes saw the historic market town of Yarm depart the abolished North Riding of Yorkshire administration, and move into the newly created county of Cleveland district (1974–1996). Controversially, any signage promptly disappeared too until 2017, when it suddenly made a reappearance, stating Yarm-on-Tees as once again being in the 'Historic County of North Riding of YORKSHIRE', which it always was.

The Ridings of Yorkshire has existed for over a thousand years from before the Norman conquest. The Local Government Act of 1972, which came into force on 31 March, 1974, abolished the county council administrations which had been created in 1889, reducing the total number of councils in England (excluded parish councils) from 1,245 to just 412.
