The much-loved York Christmas Market is back from next week – but, like last year, there will be no big Christmas lights switch-on.

A Christmas lights switch-on event hasn’t taken place since 2019, though that had been because of Covid concerns.

However, it didn’t return last year as celebrations for the 30th anniversary of St Nicholas Fair on were in place of a ‘traditional’ Christmas light switch-on.

For 2023, it will be a soft launch of the Christmas lights again, which will coincide with the start of the festive market.

The York Christmas Market will run from Thursday 16 November to Friday 22 December 2023.

Celebrity farmer Kaleb Cooper is coming to York next year on his first ever theatre tour.

The 25-year-old farmer from Oxfordshire shot to fame after starring in the series Clarkson’s Farm – which follows former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson as he attempts to run a farm in the countryside.

Kaleb had captured the hearts of viewers with his often-frustrating quest to teach Jeremy Clarkson a thing or two about farming as well as his comments on life and the universe. Now he’s hoping to entertain his audience with a ‘rip-roaring riot’ of a show.

The World According to Kaleb – Kaleb Goes on Tour is at York Barbican on Thursday 1 Feb 2024.

nspired by his Sunday Times bestselling book of the same name, the show will feature Kaleb’s strong views on a variety of subjects – including sheep (‘stupid’), Jeremy Clarkson (f***ing idiot’), goats (‘they’re a proper good clear-up animal – they eat everything – no wonder they taste horrible’), New York (‘if it’s like London where there are no tractors, that’s no good’), famous people, why farming is the best job in the world and, crucially, sartorial matters such as hairstyles…especially his own!

There will also be a chance for audiences to participate in some interesting rural pastimes during the show, and Kaleb will highlight some of the many challenges that British farmers face today – and how we can support them.

The tour will bring Kaleb to Yorkshire for the first time – and he has one of his strong views about the county.

“Everyone’s so tight [in Yorkshire],” Kaleb told the BBC. “The wallet must stay firmly shut with a padlock. If I went to Yorkshire, by the sounds of it, I’ll have to be buying all the drinks.

“I like it, but I’m going to forget my wallet so I don’t have to buy anyone a drink when I go there.”

Tickets for The World According to Kaleb – Kaleb Goes on Tour start from £31.50 and are available via the York Barbican website.

Hebden Bridge Canal Walk,

Starting at Hebden Bridge Station, join the towpath of the Rochdale Canal and turn left. Heading along the towpath you will soon approach the town and marina. Look out for the buildings that are old textile mills, full of heritage and character. Hebden Bridge was, and still is, known for the production of corduroy. Once known as the Trouser Town!

You will pass by Calder Holmes Park but continue along the towpath. Whilst walking take time to admire the interesting and colourful canal boats. Just past the park you will need to cross the canal via the footbridge, at Black Pit Lock.

Staying on the towpath you will reach Stubbing Upper Lock. There are lots of different plants and flowers along the towpath. Look out for butterflies, damselflies and dragonflies during the summer months. Not far from the lock you will arrive at Stubbing Wharfe pub.

You will leave the towpath here and head towards the front of the pub, crossing the River Calder and turn right along the road. Follow the main road back into Hebden Bridge town centre.

Hebden Bridge is full of amazing and quirky independent cafes, shops and galleries. Take time to explore the town centre and the market, if it is on. Once you have finished exploring, head back to the main road which will take you back to your starting point at the station.

Discover Hebden Bridge and the Rochdale Canal.
