There are SO many ways you can play with your baby.

You may even be playing with your baby without realising.

Playing with your baby doesn't necessarily have to involve toys.

And it doesn't need to be a planned or prepared activity either.

Playing with your baby might include:

-playing or singing music or nursery rhymes
-reading
-showing your baby props* such as a chiffon scarf, rainbow ribbon or baby safe mirror
-tummy time activities
-splashing in the bath

The most important thing to know is that all types of play will be beneficial to your baby.

*please note that adult supervision is always required when your baby is playing with props and/or toys.

🌞🌻Our first Summer Sizzler session is tomorrow (Tuesday) at Haxby Memorial Hall. We will be having a fabulous time exploring Africa in our ‘Watch Me Fly!’ Special session! There will be animals, textures to explore, baby exercises, and instruments to play. I am SO excited! There are two sessions at 10:00-11:00 and 11:30-12:30. Will you be joining us??

You don’t need to put extra time aside for sensory play with your baby.

Routine activities such as feeding, nappy changing, dressing, bathing, cuddling, carrying and preparing for sleep all provide opportunities for sensory development.

Likewise, any kind of outing including trips to the supermarket, walks in the park, visiting friends and activities such as swimming all stimulate your baby's senses.

How do you like to play with your baby?

Our Founder, and leading parenting expert, Dr Lin Day is a big advocate of playing with your baby and encouraging your baby to play.

She has done a huge amount of research into baby play and knows just how important it is to a baby's development.

This is because play is how babies learn about the world, themselves, other people and their own culture.

It also lays the foundation for reading, writing, mathematical reasoning, critical thinking, language, and scientific discovery. WOW!

However, it doesn't matter how you play with your baby. Play can be quiet or noisy, energetic, or passive, social, or non-social, relaxed, or serious, imaginative or purposeful. It can involve baby toys or no toys at all!

All types of play will support your baby's development and help them to make sense of the world around them.

Never ever worry about feeding your baby during your Baby Sensory® class.

You are welcome to feed your baby however, wherever and whenever you wish.

It doesn't matter whether you're breastfeeding, formula feeding, combination feeding, feeding sat on the floor, feeding sat on a chair, feeding with a cover-up on, feeding at the start of the class or feeding all the way through the class...
..what's most important is that you and your baby are comfortable and happy ❤️

Whether you're jetting abroad this summer or staying at home, it's important to help your baby stay cool when temperatures soar.

Here are our 6 top tips for keeping your baby cool this summer:

1. Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day and keep your curtains or blinds closed to prevent your house becoming a mini greenhouse. Keep windows open for ventilation.

2. Dress your baby in as little clothing as possible. If you can, let them play and sleep with just their nappy on. Otherwise lightweight, loose fitting clothing is best.

3. Stay in the shade if you are outdoors. A sun tent can be useful, if you are in an area with not much shade.

4. Encourage your baby to wear a hat to protect their face from the sun and also use sunshades on your pushchair and on car windows to keep the sun off your baby whilst travelling.

5. Keep your baby hydrated. If they are below 6 months they will get all the hydration they need from breast and/or formula milk. For babies over six months, offer them plenty of sips of water and foods with a high water content such as fruit & veg.

6. A cool bath or spending some time in a paddling pool* can be a great way to help your baby cool off.

*please ensure your baby is always supervised by an adult when in, or near, water

During your baby's first year their brain absorbs, processes and interprets information at a phenomenal rate.

So, whilst it might sound a bit advanced to be teaching your tiny baby to count, it’s the opportune time for them to start learning about numbers, because they are taking in so much information.

Our Founder, and leading parenting expert, Dr Lin Day advises that "there are many opportunities to introduce babies to the sounds of numbers from an early age".

These include:

-Singing nursery rhymes such as 1,2,3,4,5 once I caught a fish alive.
-Counting blocks as you stack them.
-Putting pegs into a pegboard and counting as you go.
-Counting as you go up and down the stairs at home.
-Reading stories that include numbers such as "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" or "Three Little Pigs"

Although you will likely be unable to tell what your baby is taking in and understanding at such an early age, giving babies the opportunity to see maths through play helps them to build interest for future learning.

They also gain an understanding of order, for example knowing that two comes after one and that four comes after three and so on.

The big question parents ask:

When will my baby walk?

The short answer is when they are ready! Babies generally have their own timetables that can't be rushed.

Some babies walk as early as 8 months and others as late as 2 years, however most take their first steps towards the end of their first year.

Premature babies generally walk later than full term babies of the same age because this skill is usually achieved at the age they would have been, had they been born at term and sometimes later.

If your baby isn't yet walking and you are concerned, talk to your health visitor who will likely be able to reassure you.

🌈Colours are amazing and babies LOVE them!! Pat mats are a fabulous way to explore colours and encourage patting and hand development. To make your own Pat Mat follow these steps:

💚Take one laminate pouch and turn on your iron (or hair straighteners!) to the highest setting. Do NOT use steam. Simply iron or use the hair straighteners to seal the bottom seam and both long sides of the laminate pouch. Leaving the top side open.

💛Fill the pouch with a liquid (e.g. paint, hair gel, water, baby oil, coloured shampoo), and some glitter, metallic confetti, beads, buttons, food colouring, etc. to make it fun.

💚Be careful not to over fill the pouch. You need room for the liquid to move around in the pouch and a good seal on all sides to ensure the pat mat won’t leak or burst.

💛Hang the pouch over the side of your ironing board with the open end at the top. Carefully squeeze out extra air then iron the top side shut ensuring that no fluid escapes!

💚You can reinforce the sides with colourful duct tape if desired.

I think they had fun with the Easter Special Exploratory Play Area today! 😂. We had a great time counting bunnies, catching speckled frogs, and bouncing on our ‘eggs’ this week at Baby Sensory.
