Good afternoon, The images above show a Rare & Unusual version of our recent online release named Frozen Charlotte.
For every scheduled large online release in 2025 we will make a small limited edition Rare & Unusual version as Charity Ghosts. The style of these Ghosts will vary with every release, each one identified by the new charity anchor & heart base stamp.
Frozen Charlotte has been given a ‘Gossamer’ Cellar Ghost treatment which adds a veil of subtle frosted silver shimmer to the surface. There are only six of these made and each one is numbered  and stamped with the new Charity Ghost stamp. 86% of all ticket sales revenue will go to the supported charities ( 5% retained for TYGM, 9% commission to Raffall ). We have selected Save The Children as our first charity, tickets at £2 each are for sale from now until 1pm GMT on Wednesday 29th January. There is an early bird ticket offer until 11am GMT tomorrow (23rd January) giving free ticket bundle options.
All tickets are entered into the draw individually even if bought as part of a multi-ticket purchase as one transaction. The winning tickets will be selected at random by Raffall and the Ghost will be sent out to the lucky winners soon after. See link in our stories or search “Frozen Charlotte” in the Raffall search box on their website www.raffall.com
We confirm that the dates for this year’s Ghost Week will be October 25th - November 2nd. More information will be given over the summer.

We have updated some sections of the FAQ’s on our website which you might find helpful.
We look forward to sharing more news with you again soon.

Sunday Preview
Many parts of the British Isles will be affected by snow & ice over the coming days.
As the temperature drops below zero and the snow settles we introduce our first Ghost of the year - Frozen Charlotte. Sold from our online shop on Wednesday 8th January at 5.30pm GMT. Batch of 5000. £18 + P&P.
Frozen Charlotte takes her name from a poem written by Seba Smith. Published in 1843, it was set to music and became a popular ballad of the time. This cautionary tale about disobedience & vanity has a tragic outcome.
Queue Fair will be used for the sale to protect the checkout page from high traffic. Go to the website SHOP page anytime between 4.30pm and 5.29pm to access the pre-sale waiting room. At 5.30pm you will be given a RANDOM queue position. Your queue position is entirely random and not linked to the time that you entered the waiting room. The Tannery Ghost; heralding a new classification of Ghosts, which have been in development for many years. The Ghost pictured are from our 2021 Pioneer Batch / Recipe .
We espouse traditional values; Ghosts are always made by hand and the methods of making ensure that each Ghost is a true original. The Tannery Ghosts are the epitome of these values, each one is a product of alchemy, expertise & patience.
With knowledge handed down from makers of the past we have adopted methods which use natural processes & ingredients to produce Ghosts characterised by their  beguiling patina and very particular palette of raw colours. We spent many hours experimenting & developing old recipes and dyeing techniques in the early months of 2021,continuing into 2023. There are approx. 60 Ghosts from this period of research & development ( Pioneer Batches P01 & P02 ).
Tannery Ghosts have the recipe No., batch No., manufacture date, a merchant signatory & stamp on the box.
We will sell the first batches of production Tannery Ghosts in the New Year. Full preview and launch details will be announced in due course.

“I have been spending the evenings in the companie of the delightful Herron & Wallis, in the dim lightes of their hidden workshop. Every evening when I knock upon the door, there seems to be different rituals in the art of alchemy occurring - some bringe me a Sort of Distress, such as the poisonous plantes they claim will not harm when cook’d a certain way - some are quite beautiful, such as the dying of delicate fabricks with cherry-bark, and the wrapping of ghosts with the scraps.
The two men told us how the alchemic arts is simply the metamorphosis of one element into the other. - with time, and the right attention&care, simple ingredients form something to last through time
From the diaries of J Redferne, 1762/3

At 5pm GMT today our production of A Christmas Carol performed by James Swanton will be available to watch on our YouTube channel .
£3 honesty box tickets can be purchased in the SHOP on our website, £1 from each ticket sold going to York Community Bees charity. There are also Pewter Marley Ghosts to be won in the ticket prize draw.

Friday Preview – Christmas Tree Hanging Ghost 2024 – Batch of 4,200. £24 ea + P&P.
Online sale Monday 18th November 5.30pm GMT.
For our first Christmas on the Shambles in 2019 we made little hanging Ghosts to decorate the shop and they became much sought after. We vowed to make Hanging Christmas Tree Ghosts each year in a new colour so a tradition could be built of buying and adding a new Ghost to the tree as the years go by. This sixth edition of our Tree Ghost comes in varying shades of claret through to crimson, each one hand dipped into a gold varnish and finished with a forest green satin ribbon. This release is being made early in an attempt to make sure everyone has their Ghost before Christmas, this will be the last scheduled release of this year. The height of the dipped skirt will vary between Ghosts and we are unable to exchange ghosts due to personal preference, please bear this in mind when ordering. ONE GHOST PER CUSTOMER- CHECK YOUR BASKET. Multiple ghosts in one order may result in real time cancellation to ensure stock levels remain fair.
The Ghosts will be sold using the Queue Fair system, please visit the SHOP page of our website on Monday 18th November between 4.30pm-5.29pm GMT to gain access to the Queue which will open at 5.30pm The sale should last approximately 1hr 30 minutes
Your Queue number will be given to you at random irrespective of the time that you joined the pre-sale waiting room. Queue numbers greatly exceeding 4200 are unlikely to gain access to the shop to buy a Ghost.
You will have 6 minutes once you have reached the front of the queue and entered the Shop page to buy your Ghost. Please only buy 1 Ghost. We reserve the right to cancel and refund orders which we suspect breach our terms and conditions.
Please visit the FAQ’s section of our website for general information about Online sales and further information regarding the Queue Fair system, we advise that you read this.

Good afternoon,
We write with news of our Ghost Week competition results and Cabinet of Curiosity Ghost raffle totals.
The Kirkgate Ghost Count at the Castle Museum received over 6,000 entries. Despite the high volume of entry forms nobody got the exact totals correct. There were 305 Ghosts in total with 20 wearing hats. The closest to the totals were awarded the prize ghosts. The three prize winners had the correct number of hat-wearing Ghosts and were extremely close to the 305 total, each will be sent a rare Green Shilling Ghost.
The fiendish Annus Horribilis challenge at Fairfax House also had over a thousand entrants. There were only four correct entries, and a winner was picked at random by the staff at Fairfax House. The beautiful Samuel Carpenter Black Box Wallpaper Ghost will be sent to its new home in the Northeast of England this week. Here are the answers for those who have asked:

1. £242 13 shillings and 5 ½ pence
2. 14 Clocks
3. Burgundy
4. 9
5. Daffy’s Elixir
6. Mistress & Child
7. Scarborough
8. Francis Bredall, 1717

Good evening,
A quick note to remind you all that our Charity Ghost raffles will run until 5pm on Sunday 10th November. There are five one-of-a-kind Ghosts to be won and all proceeds from the ticket sales go directly to the charities. [ to see all the ghosts & buy tickets visit www.raffall.com and search Cabinet of Curiosity Ghosts ]
We hope that we will surpass our totals from last year which will be an incredible feat. The five winners will be notified soon after the draw has been made on Sunday evening and we will be in touch early next week to arrange delivery/collection.
We will also be contacting the winners of both the Kirkgate Ghost Count and Fairfax House competition next week too. There were a record number of entries for both, thank you for supporting our Ghost week partner events with such enthusiasm, we hope that you enjoyed taking part.
Ghost Week ended last Sunday, and we took such pleasure in welcoming so many of you to York in all its autumn glory. We are very lucky to have such a kind and committed community of customers and would like to thank all those who visited our shops last week, took part in the Little York Ghost hunt or any of the other Ghost Week events. The sheer volume of customers and ghost-hunters was simply incredible ! A big thank you also goes to our talented Ghost-makers and magnificent team of shop Merchants for their creativity, hard work and good spirits. We are truly blessed to have such an outstanding team.
There will be an online release of 300 of the Black Box Jigger Ghosts next week, a preview & reminder will be made on Monday including all relevant information. The following week there will be the final scheduled release of the year; there will be a preview of the 2024 Christmas Tree Hanging Ghost on Friday 15th November.

30/10/2024

Good evening,
We wanted to take a moment to remind customers who arrive before we open-up in the morning to queue in an orderly fashion & show courtesy & consideration to our neighbours on The Shambles.  During Ghost Week (or on any day) if you arrive before we are open and have Merchants on duty, please could you allow ample space in front of The Sausage & Pie Shop opposite, keeping a gap in in the queue and the pavement clear for customer access.

We close at 5.30pm, and when queues are long it is necessary for us to cut the queue off in advance of the closing time to ensure that everyone who joins the queue will be served before, we close. Please be aware that during Ghost week and on very busy days the queue will be closed several hours before 5.30pm as we need to be realistic about queuing times for those waiting and to allow our staff to get home to enjoy their evenings at the end of our working day.

We kindly ask that customers in the day and Ghost Hunters in the evening are kind and respectful to the Merchants in the shop and to each other.  While we have heard wonderful stories of kindness so far this week, we have also experienced some unsavoury incidents too. All Shop Merchants are committed to serving customers with kindness and equality, during this very busy period we request that the staff are treated with the civility they deserve.

Sending our warmest wishes for All Hallow’s Eve wherever you are,
TYGM

Chief amongst Ghost Week events is The Little York Ghost Hunt; a totally free to all hunt for our Little York Ghosts, this is a seek & keep event. Ghosts have been found here for centuries and the seek & keep tradition will continue for generations to come. The Little York Ghost Hunt runs each evening from tomorrow until Thursday. 6pm - 8pm. There will be 125 numbered Ghosts lurking on ledges and hiding in crevices along the route each evening. The Ghosts will appear between 6pm and 8pm only, they will keep materialising throughout the two hours.
The Ghosts hide in a way that means there is no need to move things, root around in the undergrowth or climb onto on anything to find them, a torch will be useful though.
As Ghosts are scarce so we kindly ask that each person limits their collection to just one Ghost to give others a better chance of success. Do note there are now far more seekers than hiding Ghosts so success is far from guaranteed. We hope that the hunt is undertaken with this in mind and with spirit of fun and kind-heartedness.
Children should be accompanied by an adult on the hunt and be aware that the Little Ghosts are not suitable for Children under 3 years of age.

Most of the hiding Ghosts are Ragamuffins, they originate from our workshop but sadly never made it to the shop due to small imperfections. Ragamuffins vary greatly in colour and style but each is stamped with an R alongside the number on the base. There are some rarer Glowing- eyed Ghosts to find too.
If you are lucky enough to find one please share your pictures on Instagram.
Ghost Week Maps can be collected from our shops or printed from the Ghost Week section of our website.

The Seed Ghost Search is new for 2024. 360 Tiny Seed Ghosts will be hidden every day over the course of Ghost Week. They may be hidden & found at any time of day or night  but only on the streets on the Events Map found in our Ghost Week Guide.

Introducing The Ghost week Charity Ghost 2024.
The five Cabinet of Curiosity Ghosts have each been made by talented artists & artisans and are to be sold by raffle in support of five charities. Last year our Ghost Week Charity Ghosts raised over £32,000 for the supported causes.100% of the ticket sale revenue after the 9% Raffall commission goes directly to the charities. These one of a kind larger Ghosts stand 10.5cm tall and are unique in character & composition.
Tickets can be bought for £2 each on the raffall.com website, search “Cabinet of Curiosity” on the site to find them.
There are special Ghost Week ticket bundles now available until 11.30am on Monday 28th , if you buy certain quantities of tickets, you will be given free tickets too. Go to the listings on Raffall to learn more about each Ghost, the ticket offers, & supported charities.
The concept of the Cabinet of Curiosity has its roots deeply embedded in Renaissance Europe, a period marked by a renewed thirst for knowledge and discovery.
Cabinets of Curiosities were the aristocrat’s answer for enlivening the opulent but dimly lit social events thrown during the Italian Renaissance and beyond (1550 - 1800). Curious collections ranged in size, sometimes housed in a small piece of furniture know as Wunderkammer and in some cases an entire room was dedicated to vast collections of bizarre objects.
Cabinets and shelves housed original objects acquired through long journeys to faraway lands. Every object offered an opportunity to tell a story about an epic adventure or more often, to fabricate one.
With heartfelt thanks to the makers of our Cabinet of Curiosity Ghosts, Billy Ackers, Richard Mackness, Graham Gamble, Sarah Keen and the workshop of C.W. Sellors.
You can see all the Ghosts at No.60 Goodramgate if you are visiting York for Ghost Week.
Come and see a Ghost with wings, a solid carrara marble Ghost, an inverted Ghost in the form of a claw-footed cup, a Ghost hand-carved from rare mulberry wood and The Ryuutou Dabi Ghost which is encircled in a handmade, solid silver, dragon-headed serpent.

Ghost week News
The Tavern Passport
The Passport encourages visitors to visit some of York’s most atmospheric and reputedly haunted, pubs, taverns & inns during Ghost Week.
We have printed 2,000 passports for Ghost Week, and they will be available to collect from The Hatch adjacent to The Dispensary in St Anthony’s Garden between 10am-4pm daily. Passports are free of charge but please be aware that only a limited number will be available each day. This is to ensure we have passports available for those visiting later in the week.
Passports must be collected in person (strictly one per person) and cannot be collected on behalf of others. Tavern Passports are for those aged 18 and over only. Please queue outside the Hatch and not the Dispensary if you are coming to collect or redeem a Passport; Merchants and blackboards will be there to offer direction if needed.
Stamps collected in the Passport facilitate the purchase of a Tavern Ghost (a black Phantom with red eyes). Upon visiting one of the 12 participating venues and purchasing a drink (alcoholic or non-achoholic), hot or cold food, present your Passport and a member of staff will mark your Passport with their own bespoke stamp, unique to their premises.
Once you have the required number of stamps, return to The Hatch in St Anthony’s Garden (not the Shambles or Dispensary) where you will have the opportunity to purchase a Tavern Ghost. The collection of 2 unique stamps allows the purchase of a Little Tavern Ghost for £13 and the collection of 4 (or more) stamps allows the purchase of an Original Tavern Ghost for £22.
You have all week to collect stamps, but please note that Tavern Ghosts can only be purchased from The Hatch during Ghost Week and require a valid Passport. We are not able to process any Tavern Passports/ sell or ship Tavern Ghosts after 4pm on Sunday 3rd November 2024. A Passport only allows the purchase of one Ghost, regardless of the number of stamps it may contain.
We have now added the Tavern Passport page to our website where full details and terms and conditions can be found.

Friday Preview. The Jigger - Spirit Measure. Black Box Edition No.24.
Edition of 1500. £75 ea.
8.5cm tall Original sized Ghost
To be sold only from The Oak room at the Black Swan Inn, York, YO1 7PR. Monday 28th October - Saturday 2nd November, 10am-4pm. [Free entry]
It is said that the Jigger gets its name from Royal Navy ships, where the jiggermast (the smallest mast on the ship) bequeathed its name to the sailors’ small daily dose of rum, served in a trusty metal cup. Across the Atlantic in the 19th century, “jiggers” of whiskey became a spirited tradition for Irish immigrants toiling away on New York’s canal system, their measures were poured out by the “Jigger-boss”.
The Ghost Merchants Jigger is made locally from English pewter and measures a 1/6 Gil 25ml single shot or a 1/3 Gil 50ml double. The pewter has been hand cast and patinated to ensure that each ghost has its own character.
The Jigger will be on sale during Ghost Week from 10am on Monday 28th until 4pm on Saturday 3rd November and only from The Black Swan Inn. The Black Swan, as well as being one of York’s oldest pubs, is also reputedly one of its most haunted.
We shall have enough Jiggers to last through the week so please don’t feel that you need to come on the first day or early in the week to be certain of procurement. We aim to sell all remaining Jiggers from the website in mid-November.
As is usual with Black Box Ghosts there is a strict limit of one per person and they will not be sold to those aged under 16. We will accept card payment only at the venue.
At busier times queuing for entry will be outside in the concourse to the right of the inn. There will be Merchants on duty each day during work hours to manage any queue and facilitate staggered entry in smaller groups when necessary. Please do not try to queue inside the inn. We have updated the Ghost Week page with an image to make it clear.
The Black Swan Inn will also be open to the public after 12pm and we ask that our customers are respectful of their patrons.
We look forward to welcoming you.

🔥 ‘ANNUS HORRIBILIS’ BY CANDLELIGHT 🔥

Experience ‘Annus Horribilis’ (horrible year) during Ghost Week after dark with the house lit entirely by the rich warm glow of candlelight.

We will transport you back to 1763 amidst the Fairfax family’s ‘Annus Horribilis’ - a time of dark clouds, anxieties and low fortunes.

This immersive experience will bring alive the intricate details of fabrics, furnishings and décor and offers a unique opportunity to see this magnificent historic house as it would have been on an eighteenth century winter’s evening.

The family have left a series of puzzles and challenges in each room for you to solve. Those who manage to investigate carefully and find all the correct answers will be entered into a prize draw to win an exclusive ghost – the York Ghost Merchants Black Box Edition, No. 22.

This coveted and limited edition ghost was gifted to Ann Fairfax to help lift her spirits. Its bespoke craftsmanship features exquisite details from the peacock and peony wallpaper Samuel Carpenter used to decorate Ann’s bedroom during this year of her troubles.

Can you sniff out the latest quack remedy concocted by the Apothecary to ‘cure’ Ann’s woes or count the ghosts hidden in the Drawing Room?

Saturday Preview. The Ember Phantom. Batch of 5000

8.5cm tall Original sized Ghost

As we begin our journey into the darker months, we approach the halfway point between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice. In Celtic folklore, fires would be lit on All Hallow’s Eve, some containing animal bones as sacrifice to ward off evil spirits. The embers from these fires were taken for luck and protection and placed inside hollowed turnips, latterly these turnips were carved with ghoulish faces.
Just prior to the lockdown in early 2020 we sold a batch of 12 Little Ghosts called Ember; these were Ghosts of bright orange shrouded in black.
The Ember Phantom is a pure, vivid, flame orange Ghost with charcoal black running eyes. We see it as a partner for last October’s striking Betwixt Phantom. We are releasing these Ghosts early so that everyone can receive them in time for Halloween.
The Ghosts will be sold using the Queue Fair system, please visit the SHOP page of our website anytime between 4.30pm-5.29pm BST to gain access to the Queue which will open at 5.30pm the sale should last approximately 1hr 40 minutes.
Your Queue number will be given to you at random irrespective of the time that you joined the pre-sale waiting room. Queue numbers greatly exceeding 5000 are unlikely to gain access to the shop to buy a Ghost.
You will have 6 minutes once you have reached the front of the queue and entered the Shop page to buy your Ghost. Please only buy 1 Ghost only, additional Ghosts purchased will be refunded the next working day.
Please visit the FAQ’s section of our website for general information about online sales and further information regarding the Queue Fair system, we advise that you read this.
