We continue our "Back to Basics - Where are we" with, what was, our local district area - Ryedale, a charming and picturesque district that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and outdoor adventures.

Stunning Scenery - Ryedale is surrounded by beautiful countryside, including the North York Moors National Park and the Howardian Hills National Landscape. Visitors can enjoy scenic walks, cycling routes, and breathtaking views, making it perfect for nature lovers.

Historic Towns and Villages - Home to a variety of historic towns and quaint villages. Places like Visit Malton - Yorkshire's Food Capital, Pickering, which is known for its charming market square and the famous North Yorkshire Moors Railway, provide a fascinating glimpse into the past. Helmsley, another charming town, boasts a medieval castle and beautiful gardens, adding to the region's appeal.

With landmarks such as Rievaulx Abbey, a stunning ruined Cistercian monastery set in a peaceful valley, Ryedale is rich in history. The district also features Castle Howard, one of England's finest stately homes, and Kirkham Priory, an ancient monastic site. These historic sites give visitors a deep sense of the area's cultural past.

Outdoor Activities - For outdoor enthusiasts, Ryedale offers a wealth of activities. From hiking and cycling in the stunning countryside to birdwatching in its nature reserves, the area provides ample opportunities to explore the great outdoors. Forestry England Dalby, near Pickering, offers trails for walking, cycling, and mountain biking, while the nearby North York Moors National Park provide excellent opportunities for wildlife spotting and exploration.

Local Food and Drink - Ryedale is known for its excellent local food and drink scene. Malton, in particular, is a food loverโ€™s haven with numerous independent food shops, cafรฉs, and restaurants. The area is home to local produce, such as game, cheese, and locally brewed beer, and many eateries serve dishes that showcase the regionโ€™s culinary traditions. The Malton Food Lovers Festival is a popular event for those interested in sampling the finest Yorkshire produce.

Theatre, Arts, and Culture - Ryedale has a vibrant cultural scene with events throughout the year. Ryedale Festival celebrates classical music and the arts, attracting top artists and musicians to perform in beautiful venues across the region. There are also galleries, local craft shops, and community theatres to enjoy, adding to the cultural richness of the area.

Peaceful and Relaxing Atmosphere - Ryedale offers a slower pace of life compared to the bustling city, making it a perfect destination for those looking to escape to a tranquil and peaceful environment. The region's welcoming communities, beautiful countryside, and historic charm create a calm and rejuvenating atmosphere.

Proximity to Other Attractions - Ryedale is well-placed for visiting other iconic destinations in North Yorkshire. Itโ€™s within easy reach of York, with its famous cathedral and medieval history, and the North Yorkshire Coast, including Whitby, a seaside town with a rich maritime history.

With its combination of natural beauty, historical sites, and vibrant food scene, Ryedale is an ideal destination for those seeking a blend of relaxation, adventure, and culture. Do we need to say anymore? Book your visit today.

PS We know that Ryedale District Council is now part of the larger North Yorkshire Council, but to us and many other locals, Ryedale lives on.

๐Ÿ˜ For our regular guests, please tell me your โ€œmust visitโ€ place or local attraction.

Where are we?

Slingsby? Hovingham? Malton? Helmsley? As locals, we assume that everyone has heard of our local villages & towns - and we're wrong to do that. We assume you'll know where Flamingo Land, Castle Howard and the North York Moors are but, unless you've been, you won't have a clue. Just as we won't necessarily know your village or your local attraction.

So, we're going back to basics. We're going to tell you about us, about the park and about the local area. We want you to know where you're staying, where you're looking to site your touring caravan on a seasonal pitch or where you're wanting to purchase your new holiday home.

Find us on maps at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1kFQkFTwddDYkYmRVzMvyi8T0W0yPErU&usp=sharing and make sure you're one of our "followers" so we keep popping up in your news feed.

Are you staying with us this week? If so, don't forget your swimming cossies just in case you're looking for indoor activities.

St Alban's Sports Centre, Ampleforth is just 15 minutes drive from the park. Both our girls enjoyed many years of swimming lessons at St Alban's so can vouch for it being a lovely place to swim.
