Burns Night 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

To all of our Scottish followers enjoy your haggis, neeps and tatties whilst reciting poetry and drinking a wee dram of whisky!

The remains of St Andrews Cathedral - construction began in 1160 (with some debate on this) and it was designed to be larger than both York Cathedral and Canterbury! Let’s be honest, it had a better view.

In 1559 the Scottish Reformation was gaining pace and after John Knox preached a sermon the congregation headed to St Andrews Cathedral where they destroyed the fittings and furnishings. After the damage the cathedral was abandoned and in the 1600’s it was decided the stone would be used in the development of St Andrews.

It’s always nice to pop into York Minster, after seeing the statue of William the Conqueror on the Quire screen I thought why not share some history.

William the Conqueror, the first Norman king of England, was a pivotal figure in English history, particularly known for his role in the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. After defeating King Harold II at the Battle of Hastings, William sought to consolidate his power and establish Norman rule across the kingdom.

York, was of strategic importance during this period. Following his victory, William recognised the need to secure the north against potential rebellions and threats. In 1068, he ordered the construction of a castle in York, known as York Castle, to help assert Norman control over the region. The castle not only served as a military stronghold but also as a symbol of Norman authority.

York was previously an important center for the Anglo-Saxon kings and had a diverse population, including Norse settlers due to its history as a Viking settlement. The establishment of Norman rule led to tensions and uprisings, most notably the Revolt of the North in 1069. In response, William launched a brutal campaign to suppress the rebellion, which included the infamous Harrying of the North, a scorched earth policy that devastated much of the region - the Domesday Book shows a decreasing population in the north by 75%.

William’s actions in York and the surrounding areas had lasting impacts on the social and political landscape of northern England, solidifying Norman influence and altering the course of English history.

The legacy of William the Conqueror is still evident here in York today.

Last day to vote is tomorrow for the Little Vikings - York for kids awards 2025!

The Bloody Tour of York is a finalist in 2 categories:

👻Best Spooky Experience
💀Best Tour of York

We are up against some incredible businesses in both categories. I would be lying if I said we didn’t vote for The York BID for Best Spooky Experience, I mean seriously, Ghosts After Dark was amazing!!

However, if you think The Bloody Tour of York deserves to win either of these categories pop over and give us a vote, it’s the thought that counts 🗳️
