There is a huge house in Tbilisi, stretching for almost part of the avenue known also for it's extravagant architecture. This house was built in the 1912th. At that time the mansion had its own electricity, water, heating; there was an art gallery and a garden filled with exotic plants; a cinema and a photo salon, and many other amenities that people could only dream of !! City visit card and symbol of old Tbilisi - apartment building of Melik Azaryants.
When Tbilisi was still called Tiflis, the merchant of the First Guild and the owner of oil fields, Alexander Melik-Azaryants, lived in this city and was known as a man not only wealthy, but also generous. He was a member of the board of the charity, did spare money for the construction of hospitals, schools and churches. However, cruel fate did not pass over the good merchant: at the age of 22, his beloved daughter Takui died. The inconsolable father long grieved over Takui, and in order to calm the pain of the tragedy, he devoted all his efforts to building a luxurious house in the very center of Tiflis - in memory of his daughter. The merchant did not look for easy ways, he chose a very difficult relief for laying the foundation of the house. The building received a deep foundation, surrounded by a lead frame, so that groundwater does not erode it - an unprecedented case for the Caucasus of those times. In addition, builders had to hammer piles into stony soil so that the house would not fall into a ravine ...
It was the first apartment building of such a level, not only in Tiflis, but throughout the Caucasus. At the guests' disposal were shops, a photo salon, a hairdresser, a garden for walking and parking for cabs. And an innovation unprecedented in those days! The house was provided with autonomous electric and water supply. Water tanks, they say, were placed in the domed parts of the building.
The house was built according to the project of St. Petersburg architect of Polish origin Nikolai Andreevich Obolonsky.
