Would you believe it! Found without a metal detector whilst the owners( friends of our friends) dug an outside soakaway for a toilet in the mountainous region of Kakheti.
finds are now in the hands of the local museum.

Some lovely land just waiting to be detected on, my next door neighbours farmland (Kakheti)has just had its sweetcorn cut. Apparently pottery has been found in the field and this is an ancient area Bronze age with copper working close by in the mountains so has everything going for it and hopefully will detect in the next month once the sweetcorn stems have rotted down.

With the deepest regret I have had to cancel the tours again this year to to the increasing issue of Covid in Georgia.

Uptake of the vaccine is extremly slow and avaliability is also an issue.
Kindly the U.S has issued georgia with half a million doses which are being used now.
Politics and anti-vaxxers have played a big part unfortunatly in the whole picture affecting the whole infra-structure ,taxis, our team, hotels and pretty much everything included.

I didnt realise things would get this bad and have lost many personal friends due to Covid with family presently in a overflowing hospital system.

Really hoping we soon all get vaccinated here and we can start eventually after an extremly frustrating year+

Really so sorry to all of you and I know that have been so looking forwards to the trip but its just not fair to put anyones lives at risk with Georgia now being a RED status country and in critical situation so this was not an easy decision to make believe me ,and taken lots of thinking to come to this as I know lots of you had arranged flights and everything else on top.

I hope we will all come back with a vengance next year ready to kick off in April next year.

My Kindest thoughts to all of you for your continuous support throughout all of this,

I wont be sitting on my laurels though and still activly seeking new land at every opportunity.

Great news!!! more land acquired yesterday in the wine region of Kakheti,.( anyone who wants to see a 212 page PDF on the archaeology of the area message me and I can email to you)

5 acres of 16C undetected land in Tivi area of Kakheti Georgia.
A friend of ours introduced me to a chap that has found pottery on his land that dates to 16C with the village being destroyed in the past not sure if this was because of war or just neglect but looks very promising and certainly needs detecting!

Kakheti is also known for its bronze age period here being very prolific so should be a good mixed bag of finds, we will ask the farmer to talk to his local friends for more detecting heaven!

Батуми. Часть первая.

История Батуми, как и любого другого города, дожившего с глубокой древности до наших дней, изобилует легендами и мифами, и это просто здорово. Начну я, как обычно, с древнейших времен. Согласно официальной версии, первое поселение на территории Батуми появилось в районе II-I тысячелетия до нашей эры.

После того, как вы уже прониклись древностью города, самое время переходить к тому, где это было. На берегу Королисцкали, недалеко от устья, стоит холм, увенчанный развалинами и церковью Святой Тамар. Так вот именно здесь и находилось древнейшее поселение. Про каменные стены говорить не стоит, а вот земляной вал с деревянными стенами скорее всего наличествовал.

Какой именно народ жил здесь ответить сложно, но учитывая, что где-то в этих местах была северная граница царства Диаох, возможно это были хурриты. Хотя, скорее всего, это было одно из племен колхов. Что было на месте Батуми во времена эллинской колонизации не ясно. Единственное, что известно, так это то, что существовало поселение Батус.

Судя по тому, что римляне застали здесь крупное селение под защитой крепости на холме, то будущий Батуми развивался и во времена эллинов, и во время персов, и во времена понтийцев. Император Юстиниан построил на месте укрепления колхов крепость Лосорион. В то время, судя по всему, это был своего рода перевалочный пункт между Апсаросом и крупными крепостями на севере побережья. По крайней мере, очень на это похоже.

Неключевое положение Батуса-Батуми сыграло поселению на руку. В то время, как поселения с большими крепостями и гарнизонами регулярно разорялись во время войн, Батуми развивался. Если кто не в курсе, то средневековые войны представляли из себя в основном штурмы крепостей. Небольшие городки вроде Батуми служили сырьевой базой для завоевателей.

Шли столетия непрерывных войн и вот, в то время, когда с юга надвинулись войска Османской Империи, Батуми был уже достаточно заметным селением.

Influx of the Roman and Parthian coins of this period in Iberia is impressive. We take coins which were unearthed on several archaeological sites in Eastern Georgia as an example. Since they are found during archaeological excavations and more or less are concentrated, their scientific value is very high. This material gives us the full picture of money circulation on the territory of Iberia. The sites are as follows: Mtskheta-Aghaiani-Nastakisi, Zguderi (Kareli district), Ertso-Magraneti-Kushanaant Gora (Tianeti district) and Jinvali (Dusheti district). The list of the 1st-4th cc. coins found there is as follows:

I. Mtskheta-Aghaiani-Nastakisi:

a) Roman coins:
1. Denarius of Augustus (27 B.C.-14 A.D.), struck in 2 B.C.-4 A.D. at Lugdunum (?), Gaul – 158 samples.
2. Tiberius (14-37) – aureus struck at Lugdunum – 1 sample, denarii struck at Lugdunum or at some other mint of Gaul – 3 samples, 4 in all.
3. Caligula (37-41) – Caesareian drachm of 37-38 – 1 sample.
4. Nero (54-68) – aureus struck at Rome in 64-68 – 6 samples.
5. Galba (68-69) – aureus struck at Rome – 1 sample.
6. Vitellius (69) – aureus struck at Rome – 1 sample.
7. Vespasian (69-79) – aurei struck in 77-78 at Rome (1) and Lugdunum (1) – 2 samples.
8. Titus (79-81) – aurei struck at Rome in 73, 76, under Vespasian, and in 80 – 4 samples.
9. Domitian (81-96) – aureus struck at Rome in 76, under Vespasian – 1 sample, and denarius of 77/78 – 3 samples, 4 in all.
10. Trajan (98-117) – aurei struck at Rome, one of them is struck in 106 – 2 samples, and denarii of 103-111, 98-117 and 112-117 – 3 samples, Caesareian hemidrachm – 1 sample, 6 in all.
11. Hadrian (117-138) – aurei struck at Rome in 119-122, 125-128, 119-138 and 134-138 – 8 samples, and denarii of 125-128, 134-138, struck at Rome – 3 samples, 11 in all.
12. Antoninus Pius (138-161) – aurei struck at Rome in 149/150, 155/156 – 2 samples, and denarii, struck in 140-144, 155/156 – 2 samples, 4 in all.
13. Faustina Senior, under Pius – aureus of 141, struck at Rome – 2 samples, and denarius, struck after 141 – 1 sample, 3 in all.
14. Faustina Junior, under Pius – aureus struck at Rome – 1 sample, denarius – 2 samples, and denarius struck in 161-177 – 1 sample.
15. M. Aurelius (161-180), under Pius – aurei struck at Rome in 151/152, 156/157 – 2 samples.
16. Commodus (180-192) – aureus struck at Rome (?) – 1 sample.
17. Septimius Severus (193-211) – aureus of 201 struck at Rome – 2 samples, Caesareian drachm – 1 sample, copper coin – 2 samples, 5 in all.
18. Gordian III (238-244) – aureus – 2 samples.
19. Philip Senior (244-249) – aureus – 1 sample.
20. Philip Junior (247-249) – aureus– 1 sample.
21. Trajan Decius (249-251) – aureus – 1 sample.

Great post Chris and a big thank you for taking month out to explore Georgia from N S E to west ,up hill and down dale in pursuit of Georgia's beautiful history and culture.

Maia and I are so happy you understood Georgia's potential early on and embraced it full on with open heart for 2 years now with dedicated following and a true believer.
