Georgia is the one of the oldest Orthodox Country in the World - The Georgian Apostolic Autocephalous Orthodox Church (founded by St. Since the 4th century AD, Georgian Orthodoxy has been the state religion of Georgia, and it remains the country's largest religious institution. Full autocephaly recognized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1943 and the Patriarchate of Constantinople in 1990. Primate: Archbishop of Mtskheta-Tbilisiand Metropolitan bishop of Abkhazia and Pitsunda,Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II. The Georgian Orthodox Church is managed by the Holy Synod, headed by the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia. The Holy Synod is the collective body of bishops of the Church. In addition to the Patriarch, the Synod comprises 38 members, including 25 metropolitan bishops, 5 archbishops and 7 simple bishops.
83.9% of Georgia's population identified themselves as Orthodox in the 2002 census. In 2002, it was reported that there were 35 eparchies (dioceses) and about 600 churches within the Georgian Orthodox Church, served by 730 priests. The Georgian Orthodox Church has around 3,600,000 members within Georgia (no sources attempt to count members among the Georgian diasporas).
