Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the world to see whales, particularly the giant blue whale, the largest animal on Earth. The waters off the south coast, especially Mirissa and Kalpitiya, are teeming with marine life due to a phenomenon called upwelling. This brings nutrient-rich waters from the deep ocean to the surface, attracting plankton which in turn attracts whales. The best time for whale watching in Sri Lanka generally runs from November to April, with the peak season being from December to March. Lion Rock, a large, climbable volcanic plug, adds to the dramatic scenery. The Maldives, a string of stunning islands scattered across the Indian Ocean, is a paradise for beach lovers, marine enthusiasts, and surfers alike. While encountering whalesharks and manta rays depends on luck and the season, some areas are known for higher concentrations. One of the best areas in the Maldives to see whale sharks is the South Ari Atoll (Alifu Dhaalu Atoll). This atoll is considered the whale shark capital of the Maldives, where this majestic creature can be spotted year-round here, with peak season from August to November. Indonesia comprises over 18,000 islands so there are a raft of wonderful beaches to be discovered, but Pink Beach should definitely be on your ‘must-see’ list. It is also known as Pantai Merah in Indonesian, and can be found in Komodo National Park (famous for the prehistoric-looking dragon). This famous beach gets its pink hue from millions of red coral fragments. It's one of only seven pink beaches found in the world, making it a truly unique natural wonder. The beach can only be reached by boat from Labuan Bajo, the main town on Flores Island (with its crater lakes) but the good news is that we can book you a cabin aboard a luxury boat or charter a phinisi to explore these islands.

Halong Bay in Vietnam is known for its dramatic limestone formations jutting out of the emerald waters, but there are also some beautiful remote beaches if you’re looking to explore. Bai Tu Long Bay is located to the northeast of Halong Bay and is less frequented by tourists and boasts several secluded beaches. One such beach is Cong Dam Beach which has a pure and untouched atmosphere, making it ideal for exploring coral reefs, underwater caves, and lakes within the limestone mountains. To make the most of this remote location we suggest arriving by seaplane. We can also provide you with a guide to navigate the sea, via junk boat. It provides the perfect backdrop for a peaceful and exclusive beach experience.

It might not seem obvious, but Iceland has many beautiful beaches. Granted, they're not the typical white sand beaches, in fact most of Iceland's beaches are made up of black sand comprising basalt rock eroded by the powerful waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Reynisfjara Beach is one of the island’s most iconic beaches on the South Coast and is known for its dramatic black sand, basalt columns jutting out of the ocean, and powerful waves. If you remember the Alex Garland book The Beach, from the late 1990s, you’ll know that Thailand has a great many fantastic hidden beaches to be discovered. There are of course the famous ones which featured in the James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun, with their limestone karst towers - which are a part of Ao Phang Nga National Park - but we love
Nang Thong Beach near Khao Lak. This is a popular and easily accessible beach known for its laid-back atmosphere and offers a long stretch of pristine white sand with calm, clear waters. It’s perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. There’s also Tham Nam Beach; this hidden beach is a true gem. Accessible only by boat, Tham Nam Beach is a small cove nestled between towering limestone cliffs. It’s wonderful to photograph or just simply drift along in a longtail boat.

Whilst Iceland has unpredictable weather as it is even possible to experience all 4 seasons in one day, the peak months are June-August, when the days are long and warmer. However, we think September-April is the best time to see the Northern Lights (particularly around the equinoxes in February/March or September/October). Even if you missed the Northern Lights when they were in the UK back in May, we can assign you with a personal guide who will track the Northern Lights each evening and take you to the best place to see them when the night sky is the perfect backdrop for the green and sometimes red lights swirling high above.

Shoulder season for Sri Lanka would typically be considered as July-August when there is a lull in the monsoon season, but if you’re looking further ahead, then you might want some inspiration for Christmas and New Year. Whilst December is part of Sri Lanka's dry season, making it neither too hot nor too cold, whilst it is a great time to capture the tea plantations and cultural landmarks, we also suggest heading to Sri Lanka’s sun-drenched south coast (away from Galle), where along a winding track through lush jungle reveals and its incomparable seaside setting in Tangalle. Continuing on our deep dive into Japan in autumn, it's also a great time to visit for the festivals. Jidai Matsuri is known as the Festival of Ages and takes place on 22nd October. It is one of the most famous festivals in Kyoto and this colourful procession features people dressed in costumes representing various periods of Japanese history, from ancient times to the Meiji era. For those keen to immerse themselves further, are able to organise Shodo classes - Japanese Calligraphy Workshops. You can learn about the art of writing with ink and brush, to create intricate, pictorial characters or highly detailed, precise works of scripture.

Japan is a bucket-list destination for many clients, and whilst the April and May blossom season is popular, October and November are arguably the best months to visit Japan for autumn foliage, with stunning reds, oranges, and yellows blanketing the mountains. For families who crave a little adrenaline-fuelled action, then you’ll need to get into first gear to see the F1 Singapore Grand Prix in September. It’s a night race held on the Marina Bay and is famous for being the first and only night race on the F1 calendar. It’s a fabulously exciting way to see the city, for adult children to enjoy a getaway with older parents or even a great half-way house for meeting up with family further afield in Australia and New Zealand. Morocco has a diverse climate, but its shoulder season is February/March, which will actually coincide with Ramadan next year. We think this is a lovely time of year to visit; at this time it will be less busy and the springtime flowers are just starting to emerge so all the gardens are beautiful – expect to see an oasis of jacaranda and bougainvillaea, with their aroma carrying through on the breeze. If Morocco is on your list then you might have heard of the Atlas Mountains but might not realise what makes them so special. They separate the Sahara Desert from the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean; hence the name of the mountain range. They stretch around 2,500 km (1,600 mi) through Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, and are renowned for their imposing size, especially at their pinnacle in the High Atlas where Morocco's seven highest peaks are all located. Jebel Toubkal is the highest peak in the whole of the Atlas Mountains and stands at a huge 4,167m.

Although the start of the Atlas Mountains is only about 40 miles from Marrakech, we work with a number of trekking lodges, Kasbahs, guesthouses and luxury mountain retreats so that travellers can experience this mesmerising landscape and Berber hospitality to the full.

It was our pleasure to help @rosannafalconer discover hidden Delhi with her lovely young family and team her up with our local expert guide, Gagan.
