🍱 A foodie’s guide to Hong Kong’s dining scene 🍱

Renowned for its dynamic and innovative dining culture, Hong Kong boasts an impressive array of culinary experiences that cater to every palate. From fine dining establishments helmed by world-class chefs to bustling street-food stalls brimming with local flavours, this city truly is a food lover's paradise. With one of the highest concentrations of restaurants and cafes per capita globally - one for every 600 residents - Hong Kong invites you to explore a world of gastronomic delights that reflect its rich heritage and modern flair.

We’re excited that The Michelin Guide Hong Kong & Macau has just announced its full 2024 selection – a total of 79 Michelin-starred restaurants in Hong Kong. Additionally, 67 Hong Kong restaurants and street-food outlets have been awarded bib gourmands by the Michelin Guide for offering superb food at affordable prices. You can also enjoy some of the cheapest Michelin-starred dinners on the planet in Hong Kong, at Ho Hung Kee Congee & Noodle and at Yat Lok Restaurant.

One of the most popular street-food destinations in Hong Kong, with locals and visitors alike, is Mong Kok. Stalls jutting out over pavements offer skewers of cooked meats, vegetables, and fresh fruits, plus classic street-food dishes such as stinky tofu (brined in a vegetable and meat mix then deep-fried and slathered with chilli and soy sauce), siu mai (dumplings), fish balls, cheung fun (rice noodle rolls), and Hong Kong-style egg waffle.

Another great place to eat inexpensively in Hong Kong is Sham Shui Po, a blue-collar neighbourhood with street-food vendors alongside hip cafés and burger joints launched by dynamic young entrepreneurs bringing fresh new flavours to everything from traditional noodles to creative desserts. Conversely, Flying Eagle is one of the few old-school, Chinese-style steakhouses left in the city, with a retro look and dishes to match.

📌 VIETNAM & CAMBODIA 📌

Revel in history and vibrant natural beauty...

Embark on an unforgettable adventure through Vietnam and Cambodia, where iconic landmarks and hidden gems await. Marvel at the breathtaking Angkor Wat, then venture into the lush jungles of Phong Nha, exploring untouched caves and serene lakes, in an area where few tourists have been. This thrilling tour not only showcases the best of Southeast Asia but supports local communities.

Your 14-day itinerary:

Hanoi (2 days) | Ha Long (2 days) | Phong Nha (2 days) | Hue (2 days) | Hoi An (3 days) | Siem Reap (3 days)

A highlight of this itinerary is Phong Nha, a unique destination dripping with adventure and natural beauty, where you can take part in an array of activities, including ziplining, kayaking, swimming, and more – all only about an hour from the city. You’ll also have the authentic and immersive experience of staying in a locally owned farm-stay. Phong Nha is part of central Vietnam so a great time to visit is between March and August when it’s generally warm and dry.

You’ll reach Phong Nha by overnight train after spending an unforgettable night aboard a cruise boat in iconic Ha Long Bay. There you’ll join an onboard cooking class to learn to make Vietnamese spring rolls, take part in squid fishing and a sunrise tai chi section on sundeck, and join in with kayaking and swimming to explore the Tra Bau area, filming location for Kong: Skull Island.

Also fascinating is the opportunity to witness part of the DMZ (Demilitarised Zone) of Vietnam, a region that experienced significant conflict during the war. As you travel through this historical landscape, you’ll have the chance to visit the renowned tunnels of Vinh Moc, which have remained largely untouched over the years.

⛩️ SOUTH KOREA AND JAPAN ⛩️

Combine tradition with innovation in Asia...

Immerse yourself in the sociable hustle and bustle of Seoul’s lively districts of Gangnam and Seongsu one week, then wander the peaceful, timeless streets of Kyoto’s old districts as part of this magical 13-night trip. You’ll love the cultural contrasts that reveal themselves to you between vibrant South Korea and its more traditional neighbour, Japan.

Your 13-day itinerary:
Seoul (3 days) | Andong | Busan (2 days) | Kyoto (3 days) | Hakone | Tokyo (3 days)

You’ll experience the subtle cultural differences between these close neighbours and see classic destinations from different angles on this trip that combines well-known sights with lesser-known highlights. Delving into both traditional and modern places, you’ll move between cities, countryside, and coast by Japan’s thrilling bullet train network, or, in South Korea, by private car with a driver.

Over 13 nights, you’ll enjoy three delightful half-day experiences that really get you under the skin of your destinations: chopstick and spoon making in Seoul, crafting your own wooden sujeo (set) to use on your travels; a Gamcheon Culture Village tour taking in the many hidden shops and cafés of this multi-hued spot; and afternoon tea in Kyoto with a real-life maiko (fledgling geisha), a privilege few Japanese can even boast.

You’ll also dig deep into the cultural differences with insider guided tours of Seoul, Andong, Kyoto, and Tokyo, together with traditional stays in a hanok (a thatched cottage) and ryokan inns. You’ll admire the gorgeous scenery of both countries as you visit Hahoe and Gamcheon villages in Korea, then Hakone National Park in Japan, and you’ll contrast subtlety and spice with an izakaya evening in Tokyo and a night-market tour in Busan.

🌞 MALAYSIA 🌞

A Malaysian city break and a wildlife-rich island stay

Discover Kuala Lumpur from a sleek five-star hotel ideally located for some of the city’s greatest local food, art galleries, and legendary landmarks, then head off into a 2-million-year-old rainforest to spot long-tailed macaques, Oriental pied hornbills, and white-bellied sea eagles.

Your 11-day itinerary

Kuala Lumpur (3 nights) | Pangkor Laut (7 nights)

Kuala Lumpur’s Hotel Stripes is the perfect place from which to discover this dynamic city. As well as serving as an urban cocoon, with a rooftop pool and bar with superb sunset and skyline views, this chic contemporary design here has taken cues from the community’s heritage and neighbourhood. Plus, there’s a brasserie with a seasonal menu blending traditional and modern, including unique dishes inspired by guest chefs.

The Petronas Twin Towers are only about 20 minutes’ walk away; the 41st-storey Skybridge has interactive terminals to help you identify the city’s landmarks, while the 86th-floor observatory has even more far-reaching views over this dazzling city. Also worth seeking out are British colonial-era landmarks Sultan Abdul Samad Building and Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, and the restored Art Deco Central Market with its stalls selling traditional Malaysian, Chinese, and Indian crafts.

From there it’s a complete change of pace as you travel to the Pangkor Laut Resort on the west coast of Malaysia, between Kuala Lumpur and Penang, on a private island of sweeping sandy bays lapped by pristine waters. Emerald Bay, the resort’s private beach, has often been cited as one of the world’s loveliest, and a Conservation Centre has been recently established to look after the glorious wildlife that makes this island home.

🕌 INDIA 🕌

Explore India’s Golden Triangle in luxury
An Old Delhi Heritage Walk by the Salaam Baalak Trust, a full-day tour of the Rajasthani ‘pink city’ of Jaipur, and a sightseeing tour of Agra, home to the iconic monument to love of the Taj Mahal… These are just some of the highlights of this six-night tour of northern India’s most revered sights.

Your six-day itinerary
New Delhi (2 days) | Agra | Jaipur (2 days) | Delhi

You’ll start your classic India tour in the style you’ll soon become accustomed to, with a stay at The Oberoi New Delhi in the city centre, with its views of the Delhi Golf Course on one side and Humayun's Tomb on the other. After a guided tour of Old Delhi, you’ll take in New Delhi landmarks such as the red sandstone tower of Qutb Minar.

You’ll then travel to Agra by train, where you can visit the iconic Taj Mahal. Here, you can also tour Itmad-ud-Daulah Tomb and Agra Fort, where the Taj’s builder Emperor Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son and spent his final days gazing across the river at his beloved mausoleum to his late wife. You’ll overnight at the atmospheric Oberoi Amarvilas, with Taj Mahal views from nearly every room and the opportunity to sample authentic Indian food during your stay.

From here you’ll be driven to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri, a fortified ancient city of the Mughal empire. Jaipur's main sights include Amer Fort, the Hawa Mahal, and the City Palace. Here you’ll stay at The Oberoi Rajvilas: luxury villas and royal tents in a fort setting, with old armoury and hand-painted gold leaf murals on the walls. On-site historic attractions include the Shiva temple and the Rajasthani haveli, which houses the Oberoi Spa with its holistic, Ayurvedic, and western therapies.

Returning to Delhi, you’ll spend your final night at the indulgent Oberoi Gurgaon Hotel in the business and shopping district of the same name, within easy reach of New Delhi city centre.

🍁 CANADA 🍁

Combine the Rockies by rail with Alaska by sail
This is a unique and exclusive experience with very limited availability – a pre-cruise Rocky Mountaineer land programme including a train ride through the majestic Canadian Rockies, followed by an all-inclusive cruise past serene glaciers, with unlimited complimentary shore excursions such as trekking through awe-inspiring rainforest and watching majestic whales in their natural habitat.

📌Your 14-day itinerary
Calgary | Banff (2 nights) | Kamloops (board the Rocky Mountaineer®) | Vancouver (2 nights) | Embark on the cruise | Inside Passage | Ketchikan, Alaska | Juneau, Alaska | Skagway, Alaska | Icy Strait, Alaska | Hubbard Glacier | Seward, Alaska (disembark)

This once-in-a-lifetime wilderness adventure begins with a six-night pre-cruise journey that includes two days aboard the world-renowned Rocky Mountaineer®, one of the most spectacular rail experiences on the planet. As you wind through mountain passes and dramatic canyons and past sparkling turquoise lakes, you can soak in the picture-postcard views through the panoramic windows of your luxurious, bi-level, glass-domed coach.

As well as indulging in two days of the famously excellent GoldLeaf® service aboard Rocky Mountaineer®, you’ll enjoy six night’s hotel accommodation en route (in Calgary, Banff, and Kamloops) and in Vancouver. 🏜️ USA 🏜️

Buckle up for the Nevada road trip of a lifetime

This ten-night self-drive holiday takes inspiration from Accidentally Wes Anderson, showcasing everything from candy factories to historic mining parks and the epic landscapes of Death Valley. From the Bullfrog Hills with their fascinating array of old ruins and abandoned towns to the awe-inspiring Hoover Dam, this road trip has it all.

Reno | Carson City (2 nights) | North Fernley | Tonopah | Pahrump (2 nights) | Boulder City (2 nights)

Begin your exploration of the Silver State in Reno, where a unique blend of vibrant nightlife, rich history, and stunning natural beauty come together. As the sun sets, take a stroll to the iconic Reno Arch, a neon-lit landmark that you may recognise from the film Sister Act. From there continue to Carson City, where you can visit Fort Churchill, constructed to protect early settlers making their way across the US West, and the third-generation Chocolate Nugget Candy Factory.

Drive iconic Highway 50 – ‘The Loneliest Road in America’ - on the way up to Fernley where there is plenty to see, including tiny Gerlach, gateway to the mysterious Black Rock Desert with its famous Fly Geyser and more than a million acres of wilderness. Here, there’s also the chance to experience rural neighbourhood bars, such as Miners Club and Bruno’s Country Club & Motel.

Moving on to Tonopah, experience the Wild West by night and day. During the day, tour its historic mining park complete with old buildings, artifacts, mine stopes and shafts, and minerals display. When night falls, find a quiet spot and gaze skywards – Tonopah is the best stargazing destination in the USA where, on the darkest nights, you can see over 7,000 stars, including the Milky Way.

Along with jaw-dropping landscapes and unforgettable moments, you’ll be able to make the most of a fantastic onboard team of expert expedition leaders, including academics, scientists, and naturalists who share your passion for exploring and learning about one of the world’s most remote destinations.

Buenos Aires | Ushuaia | At sea (2 days) | Antarctic Experience (5 days) | At sea | Ushuaia

After spending a night in the ‘Paris of South America’, you’ll fly to Ushuaia to begin your Antarctic adventure – five days spent kayaking amongst massive icebergs, trekking to penguin colonies, navigating the Drake Passage, and watching for whales from the safety of a Zodiac. Your adventure takes in too many marvels to list, but they include the Aitcho Islands and the Antarctic Sound with its ‘Iceberg Alley’ of vast tabular icebergs, some of which are miles in length.

This is the last unspoiled continent on Earth in all its rugged grandeur. 04/09/2024

I’ve just returned from a 7 night cruise on Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady. This was our second time cruising with VV and I have to say it was one of the best holidays my husband and I have had. VV are unlike any other cruise line. There is a very relaxed vibe on the ship, the cabins are perfect - we had a sea terrace which has a big, comfortable bed, mini fridge (with free water), large tv with plenty of movies to watch, a hammock on our balcony as well as a table and 2 chairs, a large safe, plenty of drawers and hanging space for clothes, and the bathroom is small but has a bigger shower than other cruise lines I have experienced.

I’ve said this before but this was reinforced on this cruise - Virgin Voyages have the best food at sea! And it is all included in the price! Even the speciality dining.

Wi-Fi is also included as are gratuities. The only extras you have to pay for are alcoholic drinks and speciality coffees, and excursions.

Here was our itinerary for this particular cruise:

📍Barcelona
📍Toulon, France
📍Marina di Carrara, Italy
📍Corsica
📍Ibiza
📍Barcelona

And for those worried about it being a party cruise, my advice is to give it a go. This is an adults only cruise line. It is a LOT of fun! But the party side you can take or leave. The sail away party is fun and you don’t have to dance in the pool if you don’t want to! Stay up on the deck above, enjoy the music and the free champagne, and people watch!
