Nigeria became a British protectorate in 1901 while her colonization lasted until 1960, when an independence movement succeeded in gaining her independence. Nigeria first became a republic in 1963, but succumbed to military rule three years later after a bloody coup d'Ă©tat.

Akwaaba "Welcome" to Ghana.

I am glad to announce that KIA will reopen and resume operations from Tuesday, September 1, 2020.
This decision has been communicated to international airlines across the world. After weeks of thorough work, I am satisfied that it is safe to do so.

He said passengers must be in possession of negative Covid-19 test result and test should have been done not more than 72 hours before the scheduled time of the flight.

“It has been well-established that the very first cases of Covid-19 in Ghana were imported into our shores. We are determined to make sure this scenario does not recur.

“The commitment to ensuring that the gradual easing of restrictions, including the reopening of our airports, does not lead to the importation or resurgence of the virus into our country, is firmly in place,” he said.

Measures in place:

√‱Any passenger arriving in Ghana must be in possession of a negative Covid-19 PCR test result from an accredited laboratory in the country of origin. The test should have been done not more than 72 hours before the scheduled departure from the country of origin. All airlines have been instructed to ensure compliance with this directive for all passengers wishing to travel to Ghana, and those airlines who fail in this regard will be duly sanctioned;
disembarking passengers must do so wearing face masks;
upon disembarking from the aeroplane, each passenger will undergo a mandatory Covid-19 test at the airport terminal, at a fee to be borne by the passenger. The test result will be available within 30 minutes;
children under the ages of five will not be required to undergo testing at the airport
passengers, who test positive for Covid-19, will be handled by the health authorities for further clinical assessment and management;
passengers, who test negative, can, thereupon, enter Ghana to go about their lawful activities, and will be advised to continue to observe Covid-19 safety precautions during their stay in Ghana.
The Ministries of Information, Health and Aviation, and their respective agencies- the Ghana Health Service, the Ghana Airports Co. Ltd., and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority – will spell out in further detail the protocols surrounding the re-opening of our international airport, and the procedures to be adhered to by passengers arriving in Ghana at the Covid-19 media briefing on, Monday, August 31.

“For the avoidance of doubt, our borders, by land and sea, will continue to remain closed to human traffic until further notice,” he said........ These are the words from The president of

Fante Empire pt2

In the early 18th century, the Fante Confederacy was formed, with the aim of establishing themselves as a nation to be taken seriously by their European counterparts. So in 1844 a bond was written between the Fante, on behalf of the Gold Coast, and the British, allowing the Gold Coast to gain independence without war one hundred years later. Several Ashanti-Fante wars followed. On one occasion, the Fante were helped by the British, who, however, destroyed the strong Fante confederation established between 1868 and 1872, believing it a threat to their hegemony on the coast.

The Fante have made numerous illustrious and prominent people, notable among whom are KOFI ANNAN (former UN Secretary General), JACOB WILSON SEY (first indigenous multimillionaire on the Gold Coast), British journalist and writer EKOE ESHUN, OTTOBAH CUGOANO (abolitionist and natural rights philosopher), SAM JONAH(ex-CEO of AngloGold Ashanti), JOHN ATTA MILLS (Ghana's late former president), KWESI AMISSAH-ARTHUR (Ghana’s late former vice president), and a number of the advocates of independence, not only in Ghana but also in the West African sub-region, such as JOHN MENSAH SARBAH, JAMES KWEGYIR AGGREY and J. E. CASELY HAYFORD and millions of people i couldn't write their names because of time .

FANTE.... 'pt1'

The main Fante city is Cape Coast, Central Region, and Mankessim is the Traditional Headquarters with Elmina cultural backbone.
The Fante people are one of the Akan group, along with the "Asantefo" or Ashantis, the Nzema, the Baoule, the Bono, the Akyem, Akuapem, and others. Although the Ashanti Empire in historic times has rapidly grown, the Fantes have constantly retained their state to this day. Currently, they number about 3.5 million, the second largest grouping of Akan peoples. Inheritance and succession to public office among the Fante are traditionally determined by matrilineal descent, as is common among Akan peoples.

When the Portuguese arrived in the 15th Century, the Fante prevented them from involving in land and leased properties for Portuguese trading missions. But when the Portuguese objected to Fante rules and regulations, the Fante expelled them. Thereafter the Dutch arrived, followed by the British. The Fante served as middlemen in the commerce between the interior and British and Dutch traders on the coast.

Elmina

Elmina: Is a fishing port on the south coast of Ghana, in West Africa. It’s known for its beaches and for its role in the former transatlantic slave trade. Elmina Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482, was a base for trading slaves, gold and ivory. The 17th-century Fort St. Jago was used by the Dutch to attack Elmina Castle. The Elmina-Java Museum records the recruitment of Africans into the Dutch army

Today in History:

Exactly 48 years ago, on April 27, 1972, Kwame Nkrumah, the deposed President of Ghana and a great Pan-Africanist died in Bucharest, Romania after six years in exile in Guinea far away from his birthplace of Nkroful at the age of 62.

Kwame Nkrumah played a pivotal role in the formation of the African Union (A.U) previously called the Organization of African Unity (O.A.U) and led his country to independence in 1957.

President Kwame Nkrumah was unconstitutionally ousted from office through a military coup. The Coup was launched by the National Liberation council (NLC) with the code name “Operation Cold Chop,” on February 24, 1966 whiles he was in Peking (today’s Beijing) en route to the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, with plans to end the American war in Vietnam.

Kwame Nkrumah arrived in Conakry, Guinea after being invited by Sekou Toure just after the Military Coup that unconstitutionally ousted his Government from Power.

In distant Bucharest (Romania), April 27, 1972, far from his green and lovely native land and from his own people, Kwame Nkrumah died of cancer.

His death, of cancer, was announced by President Sekou Toure of Guinea, one of the militant nationalist’s closest friends. Mr. Nkrumah had been living in Guinea since his overthrow in a military coup in 1966.

The national flag of Ghana was designed and adopted in 1957 and was flown until 1962, it was then reinstated in 1966.
It consists of the Pan-African COLOURS of RED, GOLD, and GREEN, in horizontal stripes, with a BLACK FIVE-POINTED STAR in the centre of the gold stripe.
The Ghanaian flag was the second African flag after the flag of the Ethiopian Empire to feature these colours. The flag's design influenced that of the flag of GUINEA-BISSAU (1973). The flag of Ghana was designed by THEODOSIA OKOH (1922–2015).

1. The RED represents the BLOOD of those who DIED in the COUNTRY'S STRUGGLE for independence from Great Britain,
2. THE GOLD represents the MINERAL WEALTH of the country,

3. THE GREEN symbolises the country's RICH FORESTS and natural wealth,

THE BLACK STAR is the symbol of AFRICAN EMANCIPATION.

THE BLACK STAR was adopted from the flag of the BLACK STAR LINE, a shipping line incorporated by Marcus Garvey that operated from 1919 to 1922. It is where the Ghana national football team derive their nickname, the "Black Stars".

Enter Ghana. In my opinion, there are three core reasons you should visit:

-To experience the bustling coastal cities and vibrant culinary and arts scenes.

-To visit a prosperous African nation (Ghana defies the single story of poverty and strife in Africa) that hasn’t yet been touched by mass tourism.

-To engage with its painful but important history.

This last point is especially personal for me. Ghana was a major hub for the Transatlantic Slave Trade, so as African-descended people, my girlfriends and I travelled to Ghana to retrace the emotional, physical, and spiritual journey of our ancestors.

However, even if you have no ancestral connection, experiencing this side of Ghana’s history is an integral part of any trip.

Where is Ghana located? And other facts about Ghana
If you’re planning a trip to Ghana, here are some quick facts/reminders of which you should be aware.

-GHANA and GUYANA are two different countries. Ghana is located in West Africa, while Guyana is found on South America’s north Atlantic coast.

-Ghana was once a British colony that was known as the Gold Coast. However, when the country gained independence from Britain in 1957, it was renamed the Republic of Ghana.

-Ghana was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence post-colonialism.

-The capital of Ghana is Accra, and the country’s currency is the Ghanaian Cedi. Depending on the day’s exchange rate, $1 USD is about 5 cedis.

Cape Coast, Ghana

-In terms of cuisine, Ghanaians are renowned for their version of jollof (a rice dish that is popular throughout West Africa). However, tell this to any Nigerian, and they will debate this point vehemently, claiming Nigerian jollof is better.

-Ghana is rich not only in culture, but in natural resources. It’s Africa’s second-largest producer of both cocoa and gold (which is why it was called Gold Coast). It’s also rich in diamonds and oil.

-Two of the most well-known Ghanaians are named Kofi. Kofi Annan was the secretary-general of the United Nations from 1997- 2006; Kofi Siriboe is a Ghanaian-American actor (and international choco

Currency in Ghana

In Ghana, the economic system is based on the Ghanaian Cedi (currency symbol GHÂą) and the pesewa (currency symbol Gp) Pesewas are the basic units of Ghanaian currency and cedis are the second tier in their economic system; in other words, pesewas are comparable to the United States' penny and the cedi is comparable to a United States dollar. Although they may be compared in that regard, currency in Ghana is of lower denomination than currency in the United States. 1 Ghanaian Cedi converts to approximately 18Âą in the United States.....

WHEN A GUEST ASK FOR YOUR FAVOURITE DISH ON THE MENU / ASK FOR YOUR RECOMMENDATION ON THE FOOD OR BEVERAGE.

Usually it’s to help them figure out the restaurant’s best dishes. Do you often say *“I don’t have any favorites” or “It’s all good”?* That says more to me about Waiter or the Waitress being a lazy-ass server than the restaurant’s food not being good. Servers should see the question as a chance to point out some of the most popular, standout dishes on the menu (“We’re known for our cinnamon rolls, which are big enough to share between four people”) or to add some additional info that isn’t printed on the menu (“The lamb chops come from the chef’s family ranch the next town over and are some of the best I’ve ever had”). The suggestions are just a little nudge, sweetie, a little extra sprinkle of detail I get to share.......be prepared as a server.

Here are 20 vital tips for staying safe in hotels, motels and hostels across the world.

1. Do your research
What kind of crime is common in the area? Is there a terrorist threat? Are tourists and women frequent targets? Knowledge is power. Know the full extent of your situation before diving in, and be sure to look up safety tips specific to your destination.

2. Choose a suitable hotel
The singular most effective preventative technique is to select a secure hotel. Examine the neighbors around your destination. Every city has its seedy sections. Remember: location, location, location. Yelp is a great way to get informed. Reviewers often comment on the safety of the hotel and its surrounding environs.

3. Call ahead
Before you book, call the hotel and inquire about the establishment’s safety measures. Ask about security guards and surveillance cameras and whether the front desk is manned 24/7.

4. Don’t be gender-specific when reserving a room
Provide only your first initial and last name.

5. Don’t stay on the ground floor
The ground floor is the easiest to access for non-guests and intruders. Ask for a room a few floors up–though not too high in case of a fire or natural disaster.

6. Have the front desk employee write down your room number rather than announce it aloud
You don’t want anyone to overhear where you’re staying. If they do say it, request a new room and have them write it out this time.

7. Stay with your luggage throughout the check-in process
Don’t get distracted and turn your back on it. When speaking to the front desk employee, place it between yourself and the desk.

8. Ask for a couple business cards when you check in
Keep one by your hotel phone in case of an emergency, and keep one in your purse or wallet while you’re out and about. You don’t want to forget where you’re staying!

9. Inspect the room
Before you unpack, inspect the room to make sure all windows and doors have functioning locks.

10. Keep the door locked
This is a no-brainer, but it can be easy to forget. Make a habit of locking your door as soon as you enter the room. Always use the deadbolt and security chain regardless of how excessive it may seem.

11. Don’t open the door to strangers
It may be less obvious, however, if the stranger claims to be a hotel employee. If you’re not expecting anyone, call the front desk to verify. When you do open the door, keep the security chain engaged until you’re absolutely certain.

12. Check the locks on all windows and doors every time you enter and exit the room
Simple, but effective.

13. For extra fortification, pack a rubber door stopper with you
14. Use the hotel’s main entrance
This is especially vital when entering or exiting the hotel after dark.

15. As much as possible, avoid solitary situations
If necessary, call for an employee to accompany you to and from your car. You want to minimize time in unsecure environments. For example, if you’re waiting for taxi, stay in your lobby until it arrives.

16. Use valet parking when appropriate
While the service can cost money, you can avoid the walk from the parking lot to the hotel.

17. Call for room service rather than leaving a card on your door
You don’t want to alert anyone that you’re occupying the room alone.

18. Don’t leave cash, credit cards, jewelry or other valuable sitting out
Use your in-room safe to stash small valuables.

19. Leave extremely valuable items with the front desk
Many hotels do not accept liability for items left in guestroom safes. Get a written receipt for anything you leave at the desk.

20. To deter theft, provide the illusion that someone is in the room when you go out
This can be accomplished by keep the “Do Not Disturb” card on your door and turning on the television when you go out.

5. Fundamental Hotel Safety Tips for Employee

The last thing a guest wants to have to consider is if the hotel is safe enough. So, whether you’re taking measures to protect guest safety, or protect hotel employees from injury or harm, here are the fundamental hotel safety tips for employees.

1. Prioritise Security

2. Get to Know Everyone

3. Check Visitors Credentials

4. Make Sure Doors are Locked......

1. Prioritise Security:
Every single member of staff should be aware of security, from the front desk personnel to the chefs in the kitchen. Here are a few simple but important practices to follow when it comes to hotel security:

Report suspicious behaviour.

Don’t hand out room keys without someone providing ID.

Don’t give out guest information.

Make sure prohibited areas are well monitored so that guests don’t end up where they shouldn’t.

You don’t need to treat each guest as a potential threat as most security measures are just common sense. Keep side exits locked, be vigilant at all times and you’ll minimise the chance of a problem arising.

2. Get to Know Everyone:

Get to know the staff you work with. Even if you don’t know their names, make sure you know their faces. If someone new starts, take time to introduce yourself.

It’ll be easier to spot anyone that shouldn’t be there but you’ll also build strong relationships with other members of the team. Having a culture of trust and support means that everyone’s looking out for everyone else and will be less likely to ignore a hazard that could end up causing a problem.

3.Check Visitor Credentials:
Check the credentials of any people who come on site for work, which includes any builders, florists, temporary catering staff, wedding venues, and so forth. If you see a new face, check credentials
Make sure that all employees understand the protocol and that those who come on site know it as well.

4. Make Sure Doors are Locked:
If you’re nipping out for a cigarette break or you’ve taken a delivery, always be aware of the doors you’ve left unlocked. It only takes one slip-up for someone to access the hotel who shouldn’t be.

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) as part of a nation-wide enforcement exercise to clamp down on tourism enterprises operating without license from the Authority, has closed down two tourism facilities in Accra.

The facilities, Villaggio Vista and Airport Side Hotel, have been given a 24-hour ultimatum to rectify and ensure they meet the requirements for immediate reopening.

Addressing the media before the exercise, Mr Akwasi Agyemang, Chief Executive Officer of the GTA, said in line with the Tourism Act any tourism enterprise before establishment needed to go through registration and licensing by the Authority.

He said offenders were liable on summary conviction to a fine of not more than one hundred penalty units or imprisonment for a term of not more than six months or to both.

He said the exercise was mainly to w**d out illegal operators as well as sensitize legal operators who did not meet the minimum standards set by the law, saying it was a way of cleaning up the industry and making sure operators worked within the confines of the law....
This! indeed is a very big blow to the Ghana tourism industry according to Anthony Nanayaw Quayson because villaggio vista and Airport side hotel are top rang facilities in the capital city of Accra Ghana.....

28/03/2019

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has assured that effective construction work on the Marine Drive project will begin in June this year.

Reasons for the delay has been attributed to the slow evacuation of Ministries, Department and Agencies from the proposed site.

Speaking to JoyBusiness, Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Akwasi Agyemang said the evacuation process is 70% complete and that work will commence in June 2019.

“The first thing to get out of the way was the various MOUs with the landowner, which has been done. Currently, more than seventy per cent of the land has been cleared. We had a lot of government offices there. We have managed to move them all to the Ghana house, and the only thing left is to relocate the Accra Art Centre,” he explained.

stakeholders in the creative arts industry are demanding when it comes to what must be done for the sector and former Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, Madam Catherine Afeku, felt the heat.

Last Friday, March 1, 2019, the President removed Madam Afeku from office in a surprise reshuffle, replacing her with Madam Barbara Oteng-Gyasi, who was the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.

And even before she is vetted to take office, players in the industry are already putting in their two cents on what they expect from her.

Some of the stakeholders Showbiz spoke with on Tuesday said they were expecting the incoming minister to be proactive and not engage in talkshops.

Highlife artiste, Rex Omar, who is also the Chairman of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO), said the NPP made a lot of promises during the 2016 elections and he expected Madam Oteng Gyasi to lead the way in fulfilling them.

“I hope she will do something better and different which I doubt anyway because government reshuffling ministers doesn’t really change anything. The real change starts from the executive and what they really want to do.

“All I want to see is that they implement what they promised like the Creative Arts Fund, the Copyright Court which I think the former Minister started working on but most importantly, they should build the theatres they promised. At least, they should be able to build one in Kumasi before 2020 elections,” he said.
His position was supported by artiste manager and CEO of Media Excel, Kwesi Ernest, who said he had had enough of English language lessons from the former Minister, Madam Catherine Afeku, and expected more work to be done now that there was a new person in charge.

“My expectations are very simple because I want an action-oriented approach to facilitate passage of the Creative Arts Bill, Film Bill and any other bill required for the growth of the creative arts industry.

“Again, she should help to quickly facilitate the establishment of the Creative Arts Fund to allow stakeholders access funding for operations to re-energise the sector. Currently, the sector is down due to financial problems which are not helping the initiation of good projects.

“So obviously, this is not the time for plenty English because we’ve had enough of English Language lessons from Catherine Afeku and we don’t need more. It should just be action, action and action,” he stated.

With a myriad of problems bedevilling the creative arts industry, renowned sound engineer, Fred Kyei Mensah, popularly known as Fredyma, said it would be important for the incoming minister to have a meeting with stakeholders where she could outline her plans and vision for the industry.

“The new minister should be well briefed by the outgoing minister to tap into her experience. She should be able to identify the loopholes, the income generating areas, new territories, and seek advice from industry professionals like some of us.

“She should take steps to immediately upgrade the already existing tourist sites, which are dilapidated, to modern standards. Tourism, cultural and arts clubs in our various institutions should be promoted.

“She should urge the government to enforce the entertainment policy on hotel establishments in the country as well as constant training for hotel staff and managers,” he stated.
