Destination Africa Project

Destination Africa Project Many Africans who can afford it are happy to tour Europe, the Americas, the Caribbean and Asia. This has not yet happened as it should for 2 main reasons.

1.
(1)

The fundamental idea here is to encourage and motivate Africans to spend their tourism dollars visiting and exploring African destinations in general starting with Ghanaian destinations in particular. The Destination Africa Project spearheaded by Steve Ababio is born from the recognition of the fact that tourism is a global growth area that is currently one of the least developed in West Africa in

particular. A well-developed tourism sector has the potential to provide employment and financial empowerment for people from the highest to the lowest levels of society in any given community. The fundamental idea here is to encourage and motivate Africans to spend their tourism dollars visiting and exploring African destinations in general and Ghanaian destinations in particular. We believe that by doing so they will identify and invest in related businesses that will bring development and growth to rural areas that would otherwise remain deprived. The first reason is that not enough attention has been put into making most existing locations tourism-friendly: poor state of maintenance, insufficient well trained tour guides who understand they play a marketing role, lack of accommodation, places to eat, ancillary activities, publications, souvenirs and keepsakes, gift items that will encourage others to also visit the location.

2. The second reason is that very little effort and expertise is put into high quality marketing and presentation of most locations; this is a problem particularly in West Africa. The visuals for any given location present quite dismal competition for say Disney World, or the Bahamas. We seem content to accept what few tourists mistakenly find their way to our locations and the paltry access fees they pay. Much of the situation might be a result of the assumption that tourism is something foreigners do, and their numbers do not seem to be enough to make putting in extra effort worthwhile. The governmental bodies in charge of the tourism sector have also over the last few years been of little help in terms of creating and aggressively implementing policy initiatives to grow the sector and make it a vibrant and active source income and employment for the multitudes it could potentially support. We at Destination Africa are not looking to solve all the problems of the sector in one fell swoop. Our objective is to radically upgrade the visual narrative and presentation of our existing locations, both popular and barely known. We will do this through creative and imaginative world-class photography and videography, presenting the locations as the backdrop for a couple spending time together, enjoying each other and interacting with their environment. The Destination Africa Project is an initiative of Business Destinations Ltd.

Americo Cabral

This man who I didn't know from Adam, and who also did not know me from Edem, linked up with a stranger and was key to making possible some of my most expansive and groundbreaking work over the years.

He helped me get my very first visa to São Tomé and was instrumental in organising and facilitating my first 3 visits to his island nation. He had a wonderful connection with the rural people that was absolutely charming to watch. He made my first two visits to Príncipe Island happen through his influence and connections.

If you have been following my posts long enough, chances are you were at the launch of our very first Destination Africa Project São Tomé video, and you had the opportunity to meet him and hear him speak live about his country and why you should visit. Many of you have since gone on to visit and enjoy the island nation.

Today I just want to celebrate him as one of those unsung heroes; hidden behind-the-scenes workers who have done more to put their nation on the global tourism map than anyone will ever know or appreciate.

So this lovely distinguished-looking lady walks up to our tabel here at the Accra Food Festival 2023 and asks if I'm the photographer, to which I respond in the affirmative.

She nods happily and says she's heard of me. Through my silly grin I have this ni**le in the back of my brain so I ask her name. She says "Karen".

And asks whether I know many Karens.

I say yes, but I remember one in particular at Ecobank that I used to work closely with when I was a youngin at Buck Press.

Now it's her turn to grin as her eyes widen in remembrance and recognition.

Small world, never burn bridges you don't absolutely need to!

Some 4 years ago, I got a call from a South African gentleman named Avhurengwi who wanted to interview me as part of the 1000 African Voices podcast. For some reason I agreed, and immediately after the interview, I forgot entirely about it.

Yesterday, it got brought up somewhere, and a friend forwarded it to me. As I listened in slack-jawed amazement to what apparently was me speaking, I struggled to remember when I had done this. I did eventually recall and was relieved to realise that the interviewer had managed to catch me on one of my rare lucid days, so I think I made sense small.

The paradox in it is that, I find it both rewarding and deeply distressing that the things I said 4 years ago remain just as true and relevant 4 years later.

Welcome to my Ted Talk!
