Traditional fabric dyeing in the town of Ségou, Mali.
One of the most common traditional fabrics in Mali is Bogolan, widely known as ‘Mud Cloth.’ It earns its name from the unique process of dyeing cotton cloth with fermented mud
The iron-rich mud, fermented for nearly one year, produces a black/brown pigment on the traditionally handwoven cotton textiles.
Today, Bogolan is being reimagined. The fabric is heavily used in interior design, accessories, and various types of clothing due to its strong colors and unique geometric patterns.

Lupita Nyong'o playing the Kashakas in Senegal
Kashakas are traditional West African percussion instruments made of two small gourds filled with seeds or beads, connected by a string. By swinging them around your hand, you can create amazing rhythms and sounds.
Kashakas have different names in different regions, such as asalato, patica, or kosika. In Senegal, they are played by ethnic groups like the Wolof, Fula and the Mandinka.

Perched at the top of the docile ancient volcano of Petite Mamelle, Ouakam stands in its glory, the magnificent African Renaissance Monument.
The monument, inaugurated by President Wade and dedicated to the Senegalese people, took 8 years to complete due to geographical difficulties on the land on which it sits. Today it ignites a renewed sense of unity with African countries and to serve as a reminder of the possibility of greatness and Pan-African ideals to all Africans.
This timeless monument has not only attracted thousands of visitors to Dakar but has also significantly contributed to the nation’s tourism revenue, standing as the tallest statue in Africa. The ascent, comprising 208 steps to the head of the statue, offers a breathtaking view of Dakar and the Atlantic Ocean

"When you walk the paths of the dungeons at these slave castles, whether it's Elmina or Cape Coast Castle, you feel the spirits of your ancestors. You feel the suffering and the pain and just the atrocities that took place there, and you realize at that moment that you're not a descendant of slaves, but you're a descendant of survivors," says Boris Kodjoe.

African cultures have a long-standing tradition of expressing themselves through dance, with various ethnic groups having distinct dance forms for different social or ceremonial occasions.
African dances can be classified into three categories: ritual (religious), ceremonial, or griotic (storytelling). These dances are often performed at cultural events and draw a lot of attention. Here are some of the notable dances across different ethnicities of West Africa:
1. Zaouli dance from Ivory Coast
2. Kumpo dance from Senegal
3. Zangbeto voodoo dance from Benin
4. Adowa dance from Ghana

Happy Vodun Days!
Every year on January 10th, locals in Benin celebrate the festival in honor of the deities of Voodoo, a religion that originated in the Dahomey kingdom, present-day Benin and Togo.
Recognizing the cultural importance and potential of this event, the government of Benin has transformed the traditional Vodun Festival, which was celebrated every January 10th, into a two-day event known as 'Vodun Days’. The first edition of this revamped event took place on January 9 and 10, 2024, in Ouidah, a city considered the cradle of Vodun religion.
The transformation was part of a broader initiative by the Beninese government to leverage the deep spiritual roots and spectacular customs of Vodun to attract more tourists and boost the economy. The government hopes that the increased interest in Vodun culture and historical sites in the region will draw more visitors.

Join us on this ancestral journey as we reconnect to our roots. Walk the ancestral paths at the Assin Manso Slave River Site, where our ancestors had their final bath before being taken to the slave castles. We will reflect at the sacred grounds, where the echoes of our ancestral spirit and soul can be felt.
Cleanse in the waters of the Slave River and meditate with us as we honor our past and reignite our identity. Feel the pulsating walls of the slave dungeons beaming with the anguish and suffrage of the past. We crown our experience in royalty with a visit to the Ashanti Kingdom where our names will be etched in the dunes of our heritage.

A name is an essential part of one’s identity. In African cultures, names are not just labels, but they carry deep personal, cultural, familial, and historical connections. They are a way to establish one’s identity, invoke blessings and good wishes, and to preserve cultural traditions.
The Torgome Naming Ceremony is a beautiful example of this tradition. During the ceremony, Our Diasporan guests were given traditional African names, in an attempt to reconnect with their African roots.
The ceremony was accompanied by the Agbadza dance, which is a popular Ewe music and dance that evolved from the times of war into a very popular recreational dance. It is performed by the Ewe people, particularly during the Hogbetsotso Festival, a celebration by the Anlo Ewe people.
