Dior celebrates African cultures in a unique collaboration with Pathe’O—one of Africa’s most influential designers.

At the heart of this creative exchange is a tribute to the iconic Nelson Mandela. The shirts used were primarily crafted from wax, a fabric symbolic of African heritage and vibrant culture.
Dior’s artistic director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, visited Pathe’O’s atelier in Abidjan to learn about his work and the history of wax, and to exchange ideas and inspirations. The result? A stunning fusion of Dior’s elegance and Pathe’O’s authenticity.

Our tapestry experience tours combine authentic interactions with local designers, entrepreneurs and artisans in Cote D’Ivoire and across West Africa. Want to learn more about joining us for an upcoming experience? Visit https://landtours.com/tour-item/tapestry-experience or [email protected]!

The Rawani is a special turban worn by the Hausa people in West Africa. This traditional headwear, whose name translates to ‘turban’ in Hausa, holds significant cultural importance and symbolizes status and royalty.

The clever design of the Rawani serves a practical purpose as well. It provides protection against harsh weather conditions, including strong winds, dust, and extreme sunlight by covering the mouth, nose, and the chin.

looks stunning in her traditional kente attire at the recent Akwasidae Festival.

Kente is a Ghanaian textile that dates back to the 17th century, when it was worn by the Akan people of Ghana and Ivory Coast. The fabric is made of hand-woven strips of silk and cotton, dyed in vibrant colors and arranged in intricate patterns.

Kente has evolved over the years as it is no longer worn just as a toga. Nowadays more and more people are using kente to create nice modern dresses with lace, bold sleeves, and off-shoulder design.

Swipe right to see how kente has evolved.

For the month of March, we’re celebrating fashion across West Africa. One of the most iconic and colorful garments in this region is the Pagne, a piece of fabric that is often made of cotton or silk, with bright patterns and motifs that reflects a rich cultural heritage.

One of the countries where Pagne is widely worn and produced is Ivory Coast, home of the Baoulé people. The Baoulé are known for their artistic skills and craftsmanship, especially in weaving and dyeing pagne. They use natural dyes from plants and minerals to create vibrant hues and intricate designs.

We curate bespoke travel experiences in Cote D’Ivoire- often referred to as the Jewel of West Africa, and other countries across the sub-region.

Lupita Nyong'o playing the Kashakas in Senegal

Kashakas are traditional West African percussion instruments made of two small gourds filled with seeds or beads, connected by a string. By swinging them around your hand, you can create amazing rhythms and sounds.

Kashakas have different names in different regions, such as asalato, patica, or kosika. In Senegal, they are played by ethnic groups like the Wolof, Fula and the Mandinka.

Most Americans were introduced to the bustling Makola market in the heart of Accra and Akan language, Twi, during the Superbowl ad “Born to Play”.

The commercial centered on a young Ghanaian NFL fan, Kwesi, starred some of the NFL’s biggest stars, such as Saquon Barkley, Jeremiah Owusu, Justin Jefferson and Cameron Jordan.

The ad’s message was simple but powerful: “it doesn’t matter where you’re born, only if you’re born to play”. It aimed to inspire young athletes everywhere to chase their dreams, no matter the obstacles or challenges they face.

Perched at the top of the docile ancient volcano of Petite Mamelle, Ouakam stands in its glory, the magnificent African Renaissance Monument.

The monument, inaugurated by President Wade and dedicated to the Senegalese people, took 8 years to complete due to geographical difficulties on the land on which it sits. Today it ignites a renewed sense of unity with African countries and to serve as a reminder of the possibility of greatness and Pan-African ideals to all Africans.

This timeless monument has not only attracted thousands of visitors to Dakar but has also significantly contributed to the nation’s tourism revenue, standing as the tallest statue in Africa. The ascent, comprising 208 steps to the head of the statue, offers a breathtaking view of Dakar and the Atlantic Ocean

Can you guess the location?

This stunning work of art is part of the ‘Beyond Walls’ project by the French-Swiss artist Saype, who uses biodegradable paint to create giant human chains around the world.

The location of this mural is very symbolic, as it was one of the main slave trade hubs in Africa from the 16th to the 19th century where millions of people were captured and sold to the Americas, never to return.

Beninoise women are not only renowned for their courage, fortitude and elegance, they are recognized for their roles in history and development of their nation.

From the legendary Queen Hangbe, founder of the Ajojie - an elite all-female military group to the Dahomey Mothers who valiantly fought against colonialism and modern day activists and professionals defying the odds.

Silently supporting the remarkable women is the everyday women. Mothers, wives, farmers, traders who nurture, educate and feed their families and communities. They support the local economy, care for the elderly and inspire the next generation.

These women may not make the headlines, but they make the difference.

The first Akwasidae of the year, took place on the 7th January, 2024.

Akwasidae is a West African festival celebrated by the Akans once every six weeks on a Sunday. This celebration usually takes place with prominent kings and chiefs in attendance.

This vibrant festival displays the traditions of the Akans, honoring the departed chiefs and ancestors, culminating in a celebration with drumming, dancing, and merry-making. During the festival, traditional family stools within Akan tribes are brought out and cleansed.

According to some Ashanti records, the Akwasidae festival is celebrated to commemorate the spiritual descent of the Golden Stool by the priest Okomfo Anokye - the Ashanti sacred symbol of power, royalty, and unity.

In recent times, the festival has seen the attendance of high-profile individuals like Idris Elba in Ghana, paying their respect to the Asantehene.

The next Akwasidae festival is slated for the 18th of February, 2024. Will you be in attendance?

The Akan people of the Ivory Coast employ the term "Komian" to signify a state of trance, denoting spiritual possession. This term extends its application to individuals, particularly women, who undergo initiation to establish a connection with the spirit world.

Among these practices, dance emerges as the most visually captivating form of divination, known to unravel even the most intricate challenges. Positioned before an audience that includes family members and intrigued onlookers, and accompanied by the rhythmic beats of tam-tams, the Komian engages in a ritual dance.

This performance continues until she attains a state of trance, prompting the spirit to manifest itself during the "opening of her mouth," revealing insights into the nature of the problem and offering guidance for the way forward.
