🐬 Have you ever walked around the Royal Observatory and stumbled upon two beautiful bronze dolphins, wondering what they could be for?

🐬 These two dolphins hold a curved dial plate that lies in the plane of the Equator. They curve over each other so that their tails nearly touch, with the gap between the two tails acting as a gnomon*.

🐬 What's more is that there are actually two dial-plates and two rims, set for Greenwich Mean Time and British Summer Time, making the instrument always accurate to the nearest minute! Each rim is engraved with the names of the makers and the words 'For now is all the time there may be'.

🐬 The dolphin dial was designed in 1977 by Christopher Daniel, Head of Education Services at the National Maritime Museum, to mark the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee.

*A gnomon is the part of a sundial used to tell time by casting a shadow onto a surface marked with the hours of the day.
