Makola Market is one of West Africa's biggest open-air markets 🛍 🏬 🛒

Makola market is the largest open-air market in Accra, Ghana 🇬🇭. This bustling place is more than 100 years old & it is largely dominated by women traders.

"Makola" was a Yoruba 🇳🇬 expression that meant 'lucky child' and referred to the practice of parents who sent a child to start selling in the market in order to bring good luck.

Thus, the original form of the expression may well have been 'Ọmọ ko ọla wọle', meaning 'The child brings wealth home..
