Cape coast fishing village
Fishing is the single most important and accessible economic activity along the coastal settlements of Ghana. Fishing in Cape Coast is more than just for the sake of getting fish. It is part of the people's life, part of our culture. It goes with traditions and customs, and of course, it is the source of more than 90% of their animal protein. Our ancestors believed that the sea is a god that protects and oversees fishing activities. Women are prohibited from sea fishing due to traditional beliefs that they are physically unfit for such work. Fishing on Tuesdays is considered a taboo.
OGuaa fetu Afahye and Asafo companies.
In Cape Coast (Oguaa traditional area) there are traditionally seven asafo companies: Bentsir, Anaafo, Ntin, Nkum, Brofomba, Akrampa and Amanful. Each company is headed by a superior captain ('Supi') and under the Supi is a captain ('Safohen'). The leader of the asafo companies is the Tufuhen, also spelled Twafohen or Twaafohen,(master of arms), who is regarded as the General Captain with responsibility for giving orders and directing affairs if war breaks out, Herbalist( Dursinnyi/ Summankwa), flagbearer( frankai tu nyi) and Askamba the Army. Every able body individuals automatically belongs to his or her father's Asafo company. The asafo companies feature largely in the Fetu Afahye festival of Cape Coast, held annually on the first Saturday of September. Each Asafo company has designated uniform colours that have been historically established. 1. Bentsir- Red , 2 Anafo - blue and white , 3. Ntsin- Green, 4. Nkum - yellow 5. Amanful - Wine and yellow 6, Abrofomba - lemon green 7. Akrampa - white and black.
