This February represents the 150th anniversary of the Sagrenti War - an important date in Ashanti history because the British, retaliating against the Ashanti invasion of the British Gold Coast Protectorate, defeated the Ashanti army and razed their capital, Kumasi. The Asantahene, Kofi Karikari signed a treaty with Queen Victoria, agreeing to pay 50,000 ounces of gold.

Wolseley's success was attributed to a diverse force and a team of handpicked officers, utilizing advanced, albeit untested, technology like Martini-Henry rifles, light Armstrong cannons, Hale rockets, and telegraph lines. The pivotal Battle of Amoaful on January 31, 1874, where the British employed a square formation, marching into dense enemy-occupied bush, marked the turning point of the conflict.

The expedition's triumph changed political, military, and public perceptions, establishing the idea that European armies could effectively operate in the interior of West Africa.

The Asantehene will commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Sagrenti War next month:
- Tuesday, February 6 - symposium at KNUST’s Great Hall
- Thursday, February 8 - durbar at Manhyia Palace
