The Windsor Gallery was the first tunnel excavated from the Rock. It was started under the supervision of Sergeant Major Ince on May 25th, 1782. By the end of the Great Siege in February 1783, the tunnel was 370 feet (113m) long 😲

There is so much history to discover in the Great Siege Tunnels! Did you know about the the Gibraltar Soldier Artificers? They are often seen as the forebears of modern combat engineers, demonstrating how military forces could leverage construction and engineering expertise in active operational contexts.

The Gibraltar Company of Soldier Artificers, established in 1772, was a pioneering military unit within the British Army. Formed primarily to address the challenges of maintaining and fortifying Gibraltar's strategic position, this unit was composed of soldiers trained in various trades, like masonry, carpentry, and blacksmithing, rather than traditional combat roles. Their creation marked a significant innovation in military engineering, and they became the precursor to the Royal Engineers.

The largest surviving remnant of Moorish , The Tower of Homage (referred to as the Moorish Castle) is a square keep overlooking Gibraltar, full of history dating back to the 14th century!

The dents in its eastern wall were caused by Castilian siege engines in 1333 😮

The Charles V Steps make up part of The Charles V Wall which is a 16th century defensive fortification wall protecting the city of Gibraltar. You may know the steps from the Ape's Den where you can enjoy stunning views around The Rock.

The wall was originally designed to help protect Gibraltar from Turkish pirates who attacked in 1540! ⚔️
