Today we pay homage to a ship many Gibraltarians are still grateful for to this day for the lifeline it provided during difficult times; Mons Calpe.
Built in 1954 at the Ailsa Shipyard in Troon, Scotland and nicknamed “El Chulo del Estrecho” for her unflinching regularity of service, she became Gibraltar’s umbilical cord, transporting many essential goods such as oxygen for the hospital and fresh fruit and vegetables to locals from Morocco.
