Today we pay homage to a ship many Gibraltarians are still grateful for to this day for the lifeline it provided during difficult times; Mons Calpe.

Built in 1954 at the Ailsa Shipyard in Troon, Scotland and nicknamed “El Chulo del Estrecho” for her unflinching regularity of service, she became Gibraltar’s umbilical cord, transporting many essential goods such as oxygen for the hospital and fresh fruit and vegetables to locals from Morocco.

Today is and retired Bland Group employee, Louis Pereira has raised £2,500 for the Covid 19 fund by setting himself the target of walking 10 km, up and down the communal corridor of his apartment.

Amid the current times we find ourselves reminiscing over our 210 year history. In 1931, one of our most difficult years, Gibraltar Airways was established, creating a new line of business to compensate for the economic depression. A Saunders-Roe A21 Windhover flying boat and a small seaplane were required for a limited service of six passengers to commence. Providing a route by air between Tangier and Gibraltar lead to many new and innovative opportunities. Still Bland Group is as dedicated as ever in supporting Gibraltar and it’s people however needed.
