ST BERNARD'S LOWER PRIMARY

Yr1 St Bernard's Lower Primary School Gibraltar pupils learned all about how the macaques use facial gestures and subtle body postures to communicate.

It was a pleasure to engage in meaningful discussions with them as we explored how some of their facial gestures, in particular the 'Fear Grin' is not too dissimilar to a nervous smile children sometimes resort to when we may be 'guilty' of a 'misdemenour'.

In case you are wondering, in the bottom photo, children are making their best Round Mouth Threat interpretation 🐵🫶

MALES DURING MATING SEASON

Barbary macaque males arguably look most impressive and therefore more photogenic during the mating season (November to February).

This specimen posed from his commanding perch deep within Middle Hill's wild olive woodland.

FEAR GRIN

This is a subordinate female from one of the least habituated troops in Gibraltar. Even though she was about 10m away, every time we caught each other looking directly at one another she would start to frantically bare her teeth at me.

Far from being aggressive this gesture is known as the fear grin (or grimace) and is displayed as a sign of submission in an attempt to appease a potential, more-dominant aggressor when they consider they could be in imminent danger.

Studies have shown that primates which display this (silent) gesture are less likely to suffer aggression as the potential aggressor acknowledges their submissive disposition.

Interestingly our own smile and laughter are thought to have evolved from fright - think of a nervous laughter or 'put on' smile in awkward social situations with people you may not fully trust and how by doing so one somehow manages to overcome an uncomfortable situation and ultimately 'fit in' better, or if you are a macaque, come out of it unscathed.

Needless to say I was not there to harm this macaque nor even scare her so I teeth chattered to her inorder to reassure her.

INTIMATE MOMENT

There is something magical about sharing an intimate moment with a macaque. I bumped into this fully grown male quite fortuitously resting solitary deep into his habitat just about as far away as it could get from civilisation (in Gibraltar).

It didn't intend to be 'discovered' and whilst I initially disturbed it, it quickly regained it's composure and repositioned itself, it's head comfortably nestled ontop both his hands and feet; an unequivocal sign that he was comfortable with my presence.

GLOOMY DAYS

There is nothing more appealing than heading up to spend time with the macaques in gloomy levanter conditions.

The neutral light is optimum for photographing them, particularly when they are submerged in their olive woodland habitat.

Don't settle to see them playing up to tourists. View them responsibly in their natural hideouts

Amazing photo taken by Armin whom I hosted a while ago.

Armin is a travel blogger and posted this article on this link:
https://www.wild-moments.ch/en/post/barbary-macaques-in-gibraltar

a summary of which can be read below

"Today we want to learn about the natural behaviour of Barbary macaques. And of all places, in Gibraltar, which is plagued by mass tourism. A mission impossible? Not for primatologist Brian Gomila and the participants of his "Monkey Talk" tour.

Tourists teasing monkeys and then getting scared when the animals become bold. Barbary macaques stealing food and jumping on tourists' shoulders. The Rock of Gibraltar is quite a circus. It's certainly not the right place to learn about these animals, you might think. That's true until you meet Brian Gomila. Brian is a man with a mission: the primatologist shows visitors to Gibraltar the Barbary macaques as they really are. Off the beaten tourist track, he takes his guests to the quiet places in Gibraltar. He knows where they feed and sleep, how the animals move during the day and where their natural behaviour is best observed.

Brian attaches great importance to not disturbing the animals. He gives the monkeys space, so they can come to us if they want. And lo and behold, with a little distance, respect and without offering food, you suddenly become part of a group of Barbary macaques climbing around in a small forest, playing and grooming their fur. Monkey Talk is the name of the tour that Brian has been offering successfully for many years. And the name says it all".
