Ulu

The ulu is a traditional knife used by the Inuit people of Greenland and other Arctic regions. It features a broad, crescent-shaped blade with a handle made of wood, bone, or antler.

It has been used for thousands of years, primarily by Inuit women, for a variety of tasks such as skinning animals, cutting food, and preparing hides. The shape of the blade allows for efficient and versatile cutting motions, making it an essential tool for daily life in the Arctic. Over time, the ulu has become a symbol of Inuit culture and craftsmanship, embodying the resourcefulness and ingenuity of the Arctic peoples. Today they are still used in traditional practices and are also crafted as cultural artifacts and souvenirs.

Panertut 🐟

Dried fish, or "panertut" in Greenlandic, is a significant part of Greenlandic cuisine used to preserve fish for extended periods, especially when fresh food availability is limited.

To protect the dried fish from birds and other animals, Greenlanders sometimes, in addition to having nets, hang inflated plastic gloves near the fish to serve as a barrier and to deter animals that may threaten the fish.

The Tupilak is an important part of Inuit mythology and Greenlandic folklore.

Traditionally made by shamans using materials like bone, wood, or teeth, these figures were believed to have magical powers from rituals. Often, people made Tupilaks to harm enemies or seek revenge.

Tupilak figures were believed to be animated by spirits or supernatural forces and could cause illness, misfortune, or death to their intended targets. They were often associated with acts of witchcraft and were feared by the Greenlandic people. Tupilak figures were also used as protective amulets or charms to ward off evil spirits or bring luck and protection.

The Tupilak has become an iconic symbol of Greenlandic culture and art, with intricately carved Tupilak figures being highly valued as both works of art and cultural artifacts.

📌You can find these tupilaks and books about mythology @ the museum in Aasiaat.

Lumpfish 🐡

Lumpfish is a saltwater fish that typically inhabit cold waters around the northern Atlantic and northern Pacific oceans. They are known for their red or black roe, which is a delicacy in many parts of the world and is sometimes referred to as “Caviar from the North”. The roe is high in vitamin B12, vitamin A, protein and magnesium, and is also an excellent calcium source!

Fun fact about the lumpfish: The lumpfish has a modified pelvic fin that acts as a suction disc and allows it to attach itself to objects. The suction cup located on the lumpfish's underside is used to attach themselves to rocks, seaweed, or other surfaces. This adaptation allows them to stay anchored in turbulent waters and conserve energy, especially during spawning.

Have you heard about Sassuma Arnaa, The Mother of the Sea? 🌬🌊🐋

Let me tell you a bit about the Greenlandic folklore which is one of the most famous legends in Greenland.

The Mother of the Sea, known as "Sassuma Arnaa" in Greenlandic, is a powerful spirit who rules over the ocean and its creatures. She is often depicted as a beautiful woman with long, flowing black hair, adorned in sealskin garments. The Mother of the Sea is believed to have the ability to control the weather and the sea, ensuring the safety of hunters and fishermen who venture out onto the icy waters.
According to legend, when people in the settlements became overly greedy the Mother of the Sea trapped all the fish and sea creatures within her long hair, which lead to starvation. The only solution was to send a necromancer to negotiate with her at the depths of the sea. After much negotiation, the necromancer was granted permission to comb her hair, and as a result the animals were released. Along with this the necromancer received some advice: it is essential to live in harmony with nature, avoiding extravagance and wastefulness.
Tradition dictates respect for the animals caught, with every part of the catch being utilized. The meat is consumed, train oil is used for various purposes such as cooking, preservation, and lighting, innards are utilized as food or sewing materials, and skins are fashioned into clothing, kayak covers, or tents. Even the bones are repurposed to craft tools. This legend vividly illustrates the profound bond between the Greenlandic people and their natural surroundings, emphasizing the significance of balance and sustainability in their way of life.

The story may vary slightly between settlements.

Also note that as a private person you can fish what you need for consumption, but you need to have a license if you intend to sell the fish.

Greenlandic dogs alone on an island?

In the summer, some of the owner of Greenlandic dogs relocates dogs to an island, allowing them to roam freely and thrive. This environment promotes healthier fur and physical condition for the dogs.

As winter sets in, the sea surrounding the island freezes into ice, enabling the dogs to navigate around nearby towns. Consequently, they are chained during this season for safety reasons.

What is the main industry in Diskobay?

The main industry in Greenland is fishing. Fishing has historically been central to Greenland's economy and culture, with a focus on species like cod, halibut, and shrimp. Additionally, tourism and mining also play significant roles in Greenland's economy, although they are not as dominant as the fishing industry.

This is why visitors to Disko Bay often encounter numerous boats and local hunters and fishermen, immersing themselves in the region's vibrant maritime culture and traditions.

What is a turf house?

A turf house is a type of dwelling made from stones and layers of grass or sod. It was traditionally used as a home during the winter months. Before winter arrived, people would build these houses to provide shelter from the cold.

Originally, turf houses were built in a circular shape. However, around the 1600s, the Inuit began constructing longer, rectangular houses to accommodate larger groups of people, sometimes up to 30 or 40 individuals. As time passed into the 1700s, changes in architectural styles and the needs of the community led to the adoption of square-shaped turf dwellings.

When European traders came into contact with the Inuit, they introduced new materials such as wood and glass. This allowed the Inuit to improve their turf houses by adding features like windows and wooden doors. These changes helped keep the traditional charm of the houses while adapting to new technologies and living standards.

Today, turf houses are mainly preserved as historical sites, offering visitors and locals a glimpse into how the Inuit lived centuries ago.

How many lives in Attu?

Attu is southernmost village in Diskobay, where 195 lives in Attu.
The name of the village Attu translates to “the one that was touched.”

In Attu, time seems to stand still, offering a rare opportunity to disconnect from the chaos of the modern world and reconnect with nature.
