The beginning of the year is a special time all around Greenland, but particularly above the Arctic Circle.🧊✨

After weeks of darkness, Greenlanders celebrate the return of the sun in January and February, bringing joy and light back to their communities.

Children are at the heart of this tradition, marking the special moment with songs and celebrations in each town as the sun appears for the first time on different dates. 🌞

Greenland has always been a land for travellers, whether they be the very first people to set their sealskin-clad feet on our rocky ground about 4500 years ago, or the European explorers who arrived at the start of the last century. 🏔️👣

The huge distances between settlements made long voyages necessary back then, as they do today, and this long historical journey is particularly evident in the narratives at our local museums. 📜

Disko Bay, known as the land of two thousand islands, is Greenland's only volcanic region and a haven for rich wildlife, including majestic whales and vibrant birdlife. 🌋🐋

Here, you will never run out of adventures – from the strange volcanic rocks along the hiking trails on Qeqertarsuaq to paddling among the whales to the island’s summer dog sledding on the Lyngmark Glacier. 🧊🐕🛷

Dogsledding in Greenland is a unique experience 🐾✨

The Greenlandic sled dog is a special breed, found only north of the Arctic Circle here in Greenland. For over 4,000 years, these tough and loyal dogs have been essential to Greenlandic life, helping people travel and hunt across the icy terrain. 🐕🛷

An old Inuit legend says that dogs sprang from tufts of grass in the earth, appearing right after Inuit children were born. 🌾

This story shows just how closely dogs are tied to Inuit culture. For generations, children and puppies have grown up together, learning to drive the sleds side by side and forming bonds that last a lifetime. 👶🐶
