🏘️ Pelion never stops giving us hidden gems. One of them is Agios Georgios Nilias.

At an altitude of 620m, this is the ‘lead’ village of the area, which you can tell from the well-tended mansion houses and neoclassical buildings of merchants who once traded with Egypt. It’s a village that’s cultivated in every way, dripping with olive, apple and chestnut trees and with a Museum of Sculpture.

If you are fortunate enough to visit in winter, you will enjoy scenic routes by car and wonderful walks to the beautiful villages.

One of the best kept towns in Greece, the jewel of the , Nafplio is probably the most popular destination, throughout the year, for Athenians. Just two hours’ drive take you to one of the most picturesque towns in Greece, with amazing architecture, exceptional archaeological sites and castles, lovely sea, restaurants and taverns with great food, and great bars.

The town is a mixture of nobility, culture, and Greek history, at each step there’s a story to tell: a story about Venetians, Franks, Ottomans, and Greeks.

If you’d like a route that’s off the beaten track, then you can take the ‘dromoskales’ (alleyways with stairs) that connect Syntagma Square to Akronafplia promenade and explore the Psaromahalas (fisherman’s) neighbourhood where the neoclassical buildings, the old mansions and the houses of the Ottoman era create a unique setting.

Actually, this place exists in Greece! 😯

The village of Vathia is instantly recognizable by its imposing tower houses. These structures were built between the 18th and 19th centuries when the Peninsula was known for its fierce independence and frequent skirmishes. The tower houses served as homes and fortresses for the local families, offering protection against invaders and rival clans.

Today, these stone towers, many of which have been restored, offer a window into the past, allowing visitors to imagine the lives of the people who once called their home.

Take the Sarakatsaniki Sheepfold in Gyftokampos (between the villages of Tsepelovo and Iliochori), where a local initiative has recreated a collection of the straw mountain huts once used by the nomadic Sarakatsani tribe.

The huts were used when the shepherds moved their livestock to higher ground during spring and summer months and the tools and other farming utensils on display, as well as church and cheese-making facilities, offer an insight into their way of life.
