📷THE BEST PHOTO SPOTS IN ATHENS🇬🇷

👉Planning to travel in Athens and searching for beautiful spots to enrich your photo album?

👉The team of the ATHENS STORIES has gathered the most beautiful photo spots in Athens, Greece.

1️⃣AREOPAGUS
The rock of Areopagus is the ultimate photo spot for the best panoramic views in Athens, Greece. If you wish to capture the Propylaea at its best, go during midday. If you are looking for the best panoramic and romantic views, go during sunset.

2️⃣ANAFIOTIKA
Perched on the slopes of the Acropolis hill, the hidden gem is a tranquil oasis in the bustling heart of Athens. Anafiotika is characterized by its blue and white Cycladic houses, narrow passageways, and centuries-old Orthodox churches. For natural light, we recommend going before the sun sets.

3️⃣PLAKA STAIRS
Located on the Mnisikleous & Lisiou street, the picturesque Plaka stairs are famous to the locals for hanging out with friends. As coziness and the heart-warming scene is the key essence for most liked Instagram photos, capturing the happy people chilling, laughing in steps, and drinking beverage makes the stairs worth visiting.

4️⃣ODEON OF HERODES ATTICUS
Built during the Roman period, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus is an ancient stone theater located right under the Acropolis. It is still in use today and it has hosted some of the greatest artists including Luciano Pavarotti and Frank Sinatra. Midday is best here so that you don’t have the sun against you.

5️⃣THE CHANGING OF THE GUARD
The 19th-century royal palace faces Syntagma Square and has played host to the Greek Parliament since 1934. If you’re in town on a Sunday, drop by at 11:00 am to watch the changing of the guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

🏛THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVELLING TO ATHENS, GREECE🇬🇷

💵ALWAYS HAVE CASH WITH YOU
Although payment by card is nowadays possible in most of the places you visit in Athens, there are still some small places that accept only cash, such as small mini-markets, kiosks, vintage market places and grocery stores.

🪤BEWARE OF TOURIST TRAPS
When you are wandering in the center of Athens, you will see many food places marketing “authentic moussaka” and “souvlaki”. However, chances are they are tourist traps and the food they offer of very bad quality.

Our recommendation: do not enter places where there is an employee outside telling you how great the food is and trying to get you into a table. Instead, look for the small places, search online for good ratings and read local guides.

🙏TIPPING IS NOT MANDATORY
Of course, that doesn’t mean that you should not reward the person serving you, especially if you are satisfied with their service. Tips are optional, but always more than welcome!

🚌GO ON A DAY TRIP
As Athens becomes hotter and the air unbearable, there are countless day trips you can take to escape the heat. Whether you opt for an island trip or a quick getaway in the mainland, you won’t have a hard time finding something fun and interesting to do.

🚶BEWARE OF PICKPOCKETS
These days, you really need to keep an eye on your belonging when journeying on the metro. The same can be said when sitting on a terrace at busy cafes or squares and particularly if you have a habit of leaving your phone on the table while having coffee or lunch.

8 SUPERSTITIONS GREEKS BELIEVE IN

Evil Eye

The evil eye, the most talked-about Greek superstition, can strike a person at any given moment. There has probably been an occasion when you were dressed-up, and minutes after someone complimented you about your looks, you spilled coffee all over your outfit. That's the evil eye. According to Greek tradition, there are a few different things you can do to keep away the evil eye.

You can buy a blue eye-shaped charm and wear it on a necklace or bracelet. The color blue is thought to ward off the evil eye, but it's also commonly believed that blue-eyed people are prone to give the evil eye. So beware when a blue-eyed person pays you a compliment, as the compliment could end-up in disaster.

Other ways to ward off the evil eye's effect include asking an older woman (such as a mother, aunt, or grandmother) to recite a secret prayer called 'xematiasma,' spitting (or rather a spitting sound), or throwing salt over the shoulder.

Pomegranates

In Greek culture, the pomegranate fruit is associated with fertility, luck, prosperity, renewal, and regeneration since ancient times. The custom of smashing a pomegranate on New Year's Day is very symbolic. According to tradition, the juicy, bounteous ruby-like segments of the fruit fill the home with health, happiness, and joys as many as the pomegranate's arils.

Perfume

In Greece, there is a weird taboo against giving perfume as a gift, as it is thought of ruining friendships and relationships. To counteract the harmful effect, it is customary that the recipient of the gift gives a coin back to the gift giver.

Garlic

Greeks believe that garlic has the power to keep evil away. You'll often see braids of garlic, or large garlic heads dangling over the entryways of stores, restaurants, and homes. Apart from warding off the evil eye, garlic is also assumed to keep away evil spirits and demons. It is common for some folk to carry a clove of it on them or in their pockets.

Knives

Never hand a Greek person a knife, as giving a knife directly into another person's hand means they will fall out. Instead, you are supposed to set it down and let them pick it up.

Money

Greeks believe that money attracts money, so don't leave your pockets, wallets empty–always leave at least a coin or two–and never withdraw all the money from your bank account. It is also customary that when you gift a wallet or purse, you put a coin or two inside before giving it to the recipient.

Touch Red or Piase Kokkino

When two people say the same words at the same time, Greeks believe it's a sign that the 2 will get into an argument. To avoid the fight, they immediately need to say 'Piase Kokkino' or 'Touch Red' and touch something red, such as clothing or a piece of food.

Spitting

While Greek people spit for several superstitious reasons, the most common is to keep evil away. Spitting, or rather the spiting sound which sounds like 'ftou ftou ftou' is always done 3 times to represent the Holy Trinity. Greek people often go 'ftou ftou ftou' when they hear about another person's misfortune to protect themselves or their loved ones from it. Another common occurrence is with children and babies when people engage in spitting to protect the child from harm and bad luck.
