After the Greek Revolution of 1821, refugees from Chios, Psara, Samos, and Kasos settled in Syros, creating a thriving trade and shipping hub. Begin at the grand Cathedral of St. Nicolas, Hermoupolis’ patron saint, known for its opulent interiors. Visit the Transfiguration of the Saviour, built in 1824 by Psara and Chios refugees, housing Anthimos Gazis’ tomb and the Ecclesiastical Museum’s relics. Next, explore the Assumption of the Virgin Church, home to El Greco’s 1562 Assumption icon. Continue to St. George Church in Ano Syros and the hilltop Church of the Resurrection, each reflecting Syros’ rich history and stunning architecture.
