One of the legendary sites that sits beneath the slopes of the Acropolis on the southwest side, is the stunning open-air theatre, Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
In ancient times, Odeons were built for musical contests and this ancient stone theatre has gone on to host some of the world’s best musical performances during the last 60 years since its modern day re-opening, including Nana Mouskouri, Luciano Pavarotti and Frank Sinatra to name a few.

Lycabettus Hill is located in the center of Athens, Greece. It rises 300 meters (almost 1,000 feet) above sea level, offering stunning views of the city and the Aegean Sea.

To reach Lycabettus Hill:

The National Art Gallery of Athens is the most important museum for the history of art in Greece. It is located in a walking distance from Syntagma Square, just opposite Athens Hilton Hotel.

This gallery was established in 1900 and the first curator was the important Greek painter, George Iakovides. The initiative for the opening of the gallery was the donation of the lawyer and art-lover, Alexandros Soutsos. This is why the gallery is also called Museum of Alexandros Soutsos. After his death in 1986, Soutsos left his large collection of art (107 pieces) to the Greek State, so that a gallery was founded.

The National Archaeological Museum of Athens is the largest archaeological museum in Greece and one of the most important museums in the world devoted to ancient Greek art.

Athens’ street art scene just received a monumental makeover courtesy of internationally renowned artist INO. His latest masterpiece, aptly titled “6th Caryatid,” brings one of Greece’s most iconic figures – a missing Caryatid from the Acropolis – back to life on a vibrant Athenian wall.

The mural by artist INO can be found at 121 Ermou Street & Astiggos Street in Monastiráki, Athens, Greece.

This small taverna with a casual ambience, close to the Kerameikos archaeological site, is run in a relaxed fashion by two brothers who have combined their Greek heritage with a passion for Spanish cuisine. In this single-storey property with an attractive covered patio, they complement their varied à la carte of contemporary Mediterranean cooking (most dishes are cooked over a wood fire), with a six-course Taste of Cerdo Negro menu. The tsarouchi, a flat shoe with a hard sole and a distinctive large pompon at the end, holds great significance in Greek culture. It is particularly associated with the evzones, Greek soldiers, and is considered an iconic element of the Greek traditional costume.

Did you know that just a few meters away from Syntagma metro station and right next to the national parliament lies the National Garden which, together with the Ζappeion Hall, covers 24 hectares full of vegetation, rare kinds of plants, saplings and birds.
The garden is accessible from seven entrances: The central entrance on Amalias Avenue, one on Vasilissis Sophias Avenue, three on Irodou Attikou Street and two more in the area of Zappeion.

Before it was renamed “National”, the garden was called “Royal” or “The Garden of Amalia”, the queen to whom it owes its existence. The interest of Queen Amalia, wife of King Otto, in the garden completed in 1840 was such that she is said to have spent at least three hours a day personally taking care of it. She personally planted the iconic palm trees (now 25m tall) which grab the attention when you enter Vasilissis Amalias Avenue.

The name “Monastiraki” was established during the Greek Revolution against the Ottoman Occupation. It was inspired by the female monastery that was established on the square.

Just next to Monastiraki Square, one will also find the Hadrian Library and the Roman Agora with the Tower of the Winds all worth visiting while you are in Athens!
