Mystic Blue Eco Sailing & Diving

Mystic Blue Eco Sailing & Diving Eco friendly adventure holidays involving sailing, walking, diving and exploring the unique wildlife of the Greek islands.
(12)

We are a small team of sailors, divers, biologists and environmentalists who were brought together due to our love of the sea and nature. Our primary objective is the support and protection of the marine world and the raising of public awareness on environmental issues. In order to support our goal, we have formed a series of eco activities involving sailing, diving and exploring unique species. W

hen our boat is not chartered we sail around cleaning beaches, helping researchers and organisations in their efforts to study and protect the environment and wildlife. We also organise marine ecology, wildlife photography and underwater photography seminars.

"Sailing close-hauled in a strong breeze in Tahita, a boat that seems designed to slice through the Aegean white horses (or
goats if you're Greek) was the most exciting part of this trip for me. Equally memorable were the encounters with local people over meze and drinks after a day of walking, swimming and sailing.

Bring soft bags, easy to stow away. Don't expect to spend hours in the shower. Be prepared for some interesting discussions of an evening but also give yourself and others some quiet time.

A unique experience. Even if I go again, it would not be the same
as the wind and the people on board will all have an influence
on the activities. And you can't make dolphins come by; they
did though! *****" Laura, UK, 11-18 May, Sailing and walking holiday

Interesting facts about the Aegean Sea!

Throughout the Aegean area, a couple of thousand islands large and small emerge from the clear blue waters, of which approximately 30 comprise the Cyclades. These are the mountain peaks of Aegeis, the name given to a now-submerged landmass. The largest island, Crete (3,189 sq. miles or 8,260 sq. km.), is marking its boundary on the south.

For its size, no other maritime area of the Mediterranean has comparable shoreline. Both the continental shores surrounding the Aegean Sea and those of the islands are full of solitary bays and small fishing ports where seamen could find shelter at the dawn of European history, facilitating contacts between local people and those of three continents.

This is the sea upon which thousand Greek ships sailed when they set out to attack Troy and rescue the lovely Helen! Our sailing adventures on board our sailing yacht Tahita are a world away from the enormous floating cities that blight the tourism industry and the places they visit.

Instead, they take you off the beaten track into fishing villages and hidden coves, they track dolphins and seabirds, and actively encourage you to get off the boat and explore.

You'll become an intimate extension of the place you’re visiting - enjoying the services and company of people local people committed to protecting the very waters they sail.💚

Here are some of our favourite itineraries. Which would you pick?

Sea turtles evolved from land and freshwater turtles, that lived about 230 million years ago in the Cretaceous period. Even though our modern turtle species has changed over time, they are still a species that survived through the last ice age, while others like dinosaurs did not.

Seven species of sea turtles are still swimming in our planet’s oceans after more than 100 million years! One of them is the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), which we are lucky enough to have nest in the Greek seas.

This species is a symbol of the Mediterranean and the Greek seas. Greece hosts approximately 60% of the nests in the Mediterranean and two of the species most important breeding sites: the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, with its six nesting beaches in Laganas Bay in Zakynthos, and the southern part of the Kyparissia gulf in western Peloponnese.

Although it has survived successfully for millions of years, the loggerhead turtle faces extinction.

If you see an injured and/or dead sea turtle

Immediately call ‘Archelon’, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece at +30 210 8944444 or at +30 6941511511 and the local Coast Guard. Notify if you see a nest in the sand and hatchlings. If you see hatchlings, DO NOT transfer them to the sea. Clear a path for them and let them find their own way. It is important to their survival.

For more info check the Greek NGO site https://archelon.gr/en/

A blast from the past... The sensational health benefits of sailing!

"Dear Anne & Sotiris, we 3 ladies, of a certain age, really appreciated all the work you did to keep us safe and happy. We loved the islands, the sailing, the dinners but most of all your company.” Nancy, USA

“Dear Annie & Sotiris, I feel the same appreciation Nancy stated as well above. Yes, yes, yes to each point. Thank you for your guidance, your tips on what would work well, for helping us learn more about the islands and the island businesses and biology that we would never have known ourselves. Thanks for introducing remarkable taverna owner-families and their stories, dried mackerel, wild greens, fava and fish roe… your presence was our guide and our safety net, too. The combination reduces my need to take care of many traveller worries and created room for rest and recovery. And you renewed my love of sailing - perhaps there are good winds in my future as a gift of this wonderful voyage.

And, as Nancy concluded, thanks for sharing your lives and experiences with us. I wish each of you continued creative, entrepreneurial adventures as you bring connections, better ways, constructive options to life and children, and to the islands.” Anne, USA

Dear Annie & Sotiris, what a wonderful experience we had; something to remember long after today. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and keeping us alive! All the best in your future endeavours.” Linda, USA

«That was the trip of a lifetime, I am SO glad I chose you guys!

I had a wonderful time. I think my favorite day was when we went to the secluded beach on Naxos, swam into a cave, hiked up a mountain (or at least I did!), and Sotiris and Yipsum grilled dinner for us, then we swam in the darkness and saw the bioluminescent plankton. It was just a magical day from start to finish. Every night we were at port though, we went out to dinner as a group which was great because Sotiris and Yipsum knew exactly what was best on the menu, and ordered many dishes for us all to share. Not once did they ever steer us wrong!» Allie, USA, 9-16 September

"For me the holiday was expansive, expanding and beautiful. I really can’t say enough good things about it in all its aspects. I thought you and Sotris both did a fantastic job of helping to create our little community on the boat, making sure everyone felt paid attention to and part of the experience.

I loved life on the boat, sleeping on the boat. You have planned it all out very well, including the improvisational parts that couldn’t be planned! It was clear to me how hard both you and Sotris were working to make the experience pretty seamless for your passengers. I loved that the boat was old (and beautiful) and tenderly cared for, in comparison to the brand new catamarans, etc. The experience of the food, and the places Sotris guided us to, were just amazing. I took pleasure in watching you three divers. It’s a world I’ve never been exposed to and I loved when you came up each trip and talked excitedly about what you’d seen. I loved the fact that I had the opportunity to snorkel for the first time in my life (awkwardly, but still…). I was so glad to have the swims off the boat, and at the beaches.

It was an experience that will be deep in my soul."
