The Meltemi, strong northern winds in the summer, offers excellent sailing conditions although sometimes it can be challenging especially if you are sailing for the first time.

Here are our tips for enjoying your sailing holiday to the max:

- Be flexible! Choose a different sailing route or moor at a different bay which is protected from the weather. Go with the weather!

- Plan your sailing trip in Greece around the Small Cyclades islands, which are protected from Naxos island and you can enjoy short sailing legs from island to island hiding from the Meltemi...

- Plan your sailing trip around the Cyclades so you sail downwind and avoid going against the strong wind,

- Look for a window of opportunity early in the morning or in the evening to head upwind,

- Prefer to spend the windiest day of the week in a sheltered harbor or bay and explore the island you visit - there are so many options for sites to visit and activities to enjoy!

- Decrease your chances of facing the Meltemi by booking a sailng holiday in spring or autumn,

- Hire a professional skipper that knows the area very well, even if you have a skipper’s license.

- If you can only travel in July or August and you wish to try sailing for the first time with your family, consider also a different sailing area such as the Ionian islands which offer a more tranquil sailing experience.

What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

"The team was very welcoming and helpful and looked after our family in every regard, whether it be practical, safety, comfort or recommendations. The conditions determined what we could do to some extent but the crew and guide always made the best of it and discussed options with us. The local food was very good and it was great to see some different islands!... We went to smaller harbours and went to local taverns which were amazing. "Sailing close-hauled in a strong breeze in Tahita, a boat that seems designed to slice through the Aegean white horses (or
goats if you're Greek) was the most exciting part of this trip for me. Equally memorable were the encounters with local people over meze and drinks after a day of walking, swimming and sailing.

Bring soft bags, easy to stow away. Don't expect to spend hours in the shower. Be prepared for some interesting discussions of an evening but also give yourself and others some quiet time.

A unique experience. Even if I go again, it would not be the same
as the wind and the people on board will all have an influence
on the activities. And you can't make dolphins come by; they
