🚩The International Day of Tourism is being celebrated today as Greece prepares to close out a record-breaking year in tourism.

🎇Inspiring rhapsodic admiration throughout centuries, the sanctuary of Athena on the 𝗔𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀 is undoubtedly one of the most visited sites in the world! What we see today dates mainly from the age of the great politician Pericles, at the heyday of Classical Democracy, and was carefully orchestrated to glorify the excellence of Athenians at both war and peace. Τhe idea of Athenian supremacy was thus subtly propagated, justifying the imperialistic Athenian foreign policy which involved the exploitation of other Greek cities, members of the “Delian” League.

📌The most open-access and direct democracy the world has ever known, the ancient Athenian democracy has still so much to teach our own representative democratic regimes of today, even more so on this special day that we celebrate the 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗗𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗖𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗬!!
Though exclusive to the best part of the population and Imperial towards the other city-states, as promoted through the sculptural decoration of its most monumental temple, the Parthenon on the Acropolis, the Athenian democracy managed to make all decisions accessible to the people, even to the extent of featuring allotment -and not true election according to personal merit- as an electoral system to the main ruling bodies! Conversely, Pericles,
the celebrated statesman in the heyday of democracy in Athens, even introduced a salary so that poorer citizens would not hesitate to leave their own jobs behind and actively participate in shaping political decisions.
