A guest asked to cancel a tour in August, because of the forest fires in Rhodes. Here is my reply. I post it so everyone having doubts about traveling or perhaps global warming, should reconsider his thinking. A nice wake up video by UN too.
1- Google search will show you that Greece fires are nothing this year. Million hectares are burned annually in the US (California especially), Canada, Australia, Latin America (especially in Amazon) and in the whole of Africa. So with this logic, due to global warming, no-one should travel anywhere, as fires are in every country.
2- Actually at the same time, north Algeria is completely burned down with 45+ people dead and huge destruction. Was Algeria in the news you watched? No, because western tourists prefer Greece instead.
3- In Italy they have more fires, Sicily airport was surrounded by flames and all flights were suspended for 2 days.
4- How long do you think the fires will last? You come in 3 weeks. The fires will be subdued then.
5- Perhaps you forgot, but you are traveling to Crete and Athens, not Rhodes island or central mainland. Its like someone wants to travel to New York and cancel the trip because of the fires in California.
6- The worst fires this year were in Canada. Whole cities in the US and Canada were smoked out, a health hazard for residents (not mentioning tourists) but life continued as its the new normal.
7- Forest fires and global warming is the new normal. Yesterday on 27/7/23 the UN General Secretary issued an official statement that the days of global warming are over, the era of Global Boiling has started. Within 1 month there were 20 global records of high temperatures on sea and land broken. Here is a short video, saw it yesterday. 8- Global warming is a reality for many that are not watching carefully how the environment is destroyed by the big industrialised nations, and how temperatures and climate has changed. Its gradual, it didn't happen last month, there is no reason to panic or worry, we should have panicked and worried a long time ago. The problem is that this phenomenon cannot be reversed.
9- My recommendation is not to travel during high season, in the middle of the summer, that is July and August, wherever you are in the world. Too many tourists, traffic and heat waves. That includes travelling in the southern hemisphere between November-January, as its the equivalent of their July-August.

According to Trip Advisors' Travellers' Choice, Crete is no2 best destination in the world. I am not sure if Rome deserves the 1st place, as ingredients are imported and have developed a tourist-catered product in a more mass scale than local family businesses in the Cretan mountain villages.

January 2023 was the warmest since 2010. Chart shows temperature deviation from the normal average temperatures. In Chania temperatures around lunchtime reached sometimes 22C. In Chania it rained the last 2 days of the month. For northern Greece it was even warmer as temperatures at night are usually minus. When US and northern Europe was freezing, we had heat waves coming from Africa. February is back to normal and have snow on the mountains, at last. We need the water reserves for the summer.

According to Mabrian, a technology company which analyses the data from TripAdvisor and other sources regarding the trends in 2023, Crete is second on the world list after Bali. This is a list of improvement/increase, not total guests or profits.

It is snowing in Chania town today. 4C outside temperature, equal to -50C for north Europe (Cretans are spoiled with hot weather)! This winter is very harsh for Greece. White is no snow, purple is completely snow covered.
