If you want to experience real Cretan cuisine, Tsigariasto is a must-try! This traditional slow-cooked goat or lamb dish comes from the mountainous regions of Crete, especially in Sfakia and Rethymno.

🥩 What makes it special?
Unlike other meat dishes, Tsigariasto is cooked without water—only in its own juices and high-quality Cretan olive oil. The slow cooking process (sometimes over 4 hours!) results in tender, flavorful meat that melts in your mouth.

🌿 A dish with history
The name “Tsigariasto” comes from the Greek word tsigaro, meaning “to sear”, referring to the cooking technique where the meat is browned before being slow-cooked. Traditionally, shepherds would prepare this dish using fresh meat from their flocks, cooking it over an open fire.
