Matala (Crete island)
Although Matala is an incredible beach with refreshing waters which are surrounded by the spectacular and full of trees scenery, people visit the location due to the infamous caves that can be found there. The caves form the most notable feature of this location as they are carved into white washed rocks since antiquity. These caves can be found in the northwest side of the Matala beach. The caves in Matala beach became increasingly popular during the period between 1960s and 1970s. This is because members of the hippie movement made these caves their home. During that period, thousands of hippies made Matala the place where ideas were freely expressed and a place where love and creation were cherishing. The hippies that were living in the caves of Matala were famous for their signature slogan “Peace Man” and the two fingers of victory. Back then, the surrounding area was not developed and hippies made this spot their preferable location as it was providing the perfect sense of freedom and isolation. Sooner or later, the caves of Matala became famous around the world as an alternative form of accommodation where people were living freely and enjoyed their lives at the maximum. People from around the world were gathering in Matala and lived there peacefully. Matala started to attract famous people such as Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Joan Baez and Cat Stevens, who visited the beach and stayed at the caves.

Knossos palace (Crete island)
The Palace of Knossos is located in North Central Crete just south of the outskirts of Heraklion on the Kephala hill. The site was first occupied some time around 7000 BCE in what is called the Aceramic Neolithic period (aceramic because no pottery was produced). The Bronze Age was not to begin for a further four thousand years. It is thought that Knossos was the first and oldest Neolithic site in Crete and the first indication of human activity on the island is located in the exact area where the Palace and its Central Court were to be located. So humans had been continually active on the site for five thousand years before the First Palace was constructed.

Malia is located 37 kilometers east of Heraklion, on the way to Agios Nikolaos. The main road seems to divide the town in two, the old Malia at the foothill of Mount Selena and the newer part towards the shoreline.
Malia is an unusual small town, unlike any other in Crete. It used to be known for its delicious potatoes. But times changed, the tourists started coming to Crete and the potato fields of Malia were replaced by hotels large and small, taverns and bars.
Tourism eventually created a town with two different faces, like the famous split personality described by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1886:
On the one hand is Dr Jekyll, the old Malia with its narrow streets, houses with bougainvillea and little taverns with live Greek music.
On the other is Mr. Hyde, the coastal resort with its bars, nightclubs and frenzied nightlife of young tourists from 11 at night into the early hours.
If you are the Dr Jekyll type, when night falls stay in old Malia south of the main road. If you are a Mr. Hyde, then coastal Malia awaits you for an endless party each night.
If, like most of us, you have a little of both Jekyll and Hyde in you, enjoy all that Malia has to offer, but within reason
